HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH:
are needing helpers for Christian Aid week, which is May 11th-17th, if you can assist please contact Georgie Inglis, tel: 703809. Take a look at Tearfund's website www.tearfund.org to get a flavour of the work they do overseas, particularly with those suffering from HIV.
The Church's PLANT SALE will be on Friday 16th May, starting at 7pm. Be there pronto, if you want to get this years bedding plants, they tend to go fast!
FETE WEEK: starts with the Glasgow Wind band giving a concert in the Church of Scotland on Friday 13th June, at 7.30pm. The following day (Saturday 14th June), there will be a HWW walk: meet at 1pm in the "Triangle", if the weather is fine, we shall do the "Blue" walk, over Whittliemuir. Saturday 21st June: is the date of the FETE itself. If you are planning, or would like to organise an event as part of the week, please let me know asap, and we can include it in the publicity, which should be ready in a fortnight.
GOOD CITIZEN: on a recent visit to Scotland's booktown: Wigtown in Dumfries & Galloway, as we walked up to the Martyrs monument above the town, there was a disabled guy in a battery powered wheelchair out for a stroll; he was using a litter picker and the basket at the front of his chair, to clear up bits of rubbish! We can all make excuses for not doing things, but where there is a will there is a way.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL MEETING: is Tuesday 13th May, at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. The new Community Council liaison Officer Anne McNaughton will be attending, as will Scott Allan from the Council's Roads Department. If there is a specific issue you wish to raise, please let me know, and I will pass it on to the chairman.
SURVEYS: keep them coming in. One issue that I have been asked to highlight is dog fouling. Most dog owners are responsible, but sadly some are not, and it makes no difference how often they are reminded to clear up after their dogs, how many dog pooh bins there are, some people just don't care where their dogs do it. When that is a children's play area, that hits an all time low. The only thing to do is report the owners to the dog warden: 0141 840 3164. She will contact the dog owner, and you do not have to leave your name if you that worries you.

ERSKINE BRIDGE CROSS:
members of the church are looking for sponsors to raise money for agricultural projects in the developing world.  they will be walking across the Erskine bridge, this saturday (26th April).  If you would like to sponsor them, contact Georgie Inglis on 01505 703809

WIND BAND CONCERT:   the Glasgow Wind band are coming back again, and the date for the concert has been confirmed as Friday 13th June, 7.30pm in Howwood Parish (Church of Scotland) Church.  So put it in your diaries, and evening not to be missed!
PARK MEETING:  a senior member of the Environmental Services department of the Council was present at the last Community Council meeting, and as a result some matters have received rapid and welcome attention:  namely better lighting in the "Triangle", the removal of the fallen trees in the park, and grass cuttings not being spread all over the paths in the "Triangle".  The Council was supportive of our efforts in the Village Clean up, and plans to tackle some of the black spots themselves, they also are preparing to start enforcing the existing laws against littering and dog fouling.  so if you are not in the habit of clearing up after your dog, or drop litter where ever you go, now would be a good time to stop.
FILL IN YOUR SURVEY:  thanks to everyone who has sent a survey back completed, keep them coming:  some useful ideas, some strange ones, but that is in the nature of any consultation.  Again the importance of a safe link from the village to the Sustrans cycleway, has emerged.  We will take up this project again with the Roads Department at the May meeting.  The more support we get from the community, the easier it is to make a strong case.
TABLE TOP SALE:  will be held in the Village Hall on Saturday 26th April from 1pm-4pm on behalf of Howwood Wildlife and Woodlands.  You may have noticed, work has started to turn the area opposite the Howwood Inn into a woodland garden, with paths and seating areas.  The proceeds from the Table Top sale, will go towards this project.  If you would like a table to sell stuff at the sale, the cost is £10 and you can book it from myself, contact Andrew Wilson on 01505 702392;  e-mail  Andrew@Howwood.com

VILLAGE HALL:
has been repainted inside, and the floor re-done.  The Community Council wrote to Renfrewshire Council, expressing the community's thanks for the upgrade, and  the CC bought the new curtains, as our contribution.   We are fortunate to have two excellent hall keepers in Margaret and Derek, we hope all users of the hall enjoy the splendid new decor!

SENIOR CITIZENS VOUCHER/OUTING SCHEME:   is being run again.  If you are 70 years old or over, or will be 70 this year:  you qualify for either the annual bus trip and tea, a £22 voucher for shopping, or £22 off your Council tax......but you need to apply!   I will leave the information and application forms with Linda at the Post Office, or you can phone the helpline on 0141 842 5850.
PARK MEETING:  we have finally secured the next meeting with Council officials (Tuesday 22nd April), to discuss what could be done to improve the park.  Our elected Councillors will be along to add support, which makes it even more important that you...... FILL IN YOUR SURVEY:  every household should have received one.  If you have not, there are more at the Post Office, or shops, or you can fill it in on line at www.Howwood.com  It will only take a few minutes, and will help us make a case for getting things done, which will benefit us all in the longrun.  Thank you.

SPRING CLEAN:  the annual litter picking/clean up of the village happened, and a big thank you to all who helped, including 2 of our Elected Councillors, which was much appreciated.  The actual numbers who did help was incredibly low.  It is very disappointing that nearly everyone in the village cannot spare time to help.

HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH WALKING GROUP:
will meet on Saturday 12th April @ 1pm at the church.  The plan is to go to Rouken Glen, weather permitting.  For full details phone Mairi Mitchell on 705129.  All Welcome.

HOWWOOD W.R.I:  the last meeting of the term is on Tuesday 15th April in the Village Hall at 7.30pm.  It will be the AGM, and presentations;  but Duncan McDoanld will speak about "Seasons for photography" as well.
BROWN BIN COLLECTION:  you should have all received notification, that the brown bins will be collected on Fridays, starting with this Friday 11th April.  I presume this applies to the whole village.  So Brown bins go out the same week as blue boxes, and on the same day as the black bins.  Everyone clear?  If you need more information phone the Council's recycling helpline: 0141 842 4402.

ANYONE KNOW THE MCNABS OF MIDTON WORKS?:
our website received the following request.   "My grandfather was Alexander MacNab, born April 4th, 1888—various spellings in documents of his were McNab-McNat, but we are not sure if this was due to spelling errors here in the USA. His birth certificate is deteriorated so badly we are unable to read it. Passport information and information passed to his daughters list his parents as James Miller MacNab and Elizabeth Clark MacNab.  Their children were Alexander, Thomas, John, Agnes, Elizabeth and Mary. They came to the United States when my grandfather was in his 20’s—I believe sometime around 1911. His “naturalization” date to the USA was March 20, 1917.  We are curious to see if any relatives still reside there or if anyone knows where the family homestead would have been. I would appreciate any help you could possibly provide."   They are coming over in a fortnight so please let us know if you can help them.
BOOK SALE & COFFEE MORNING:  will take place in Johnstone Town Hall on Saturday 5th April from 10.30pm until mid-day, on behalf of Christian Aid.  Tickets for the even cost £1.50, and are available from Georgie Inglis, or at the door.  If you can contribute books or home baking to Howwood Parish (Church of Scotland) stall please contact Georgie. via the church.

SPRING CLEAN:
the annual litter picking/clean up of the village is coming.  Meet at 1pm in front of the Village Hall on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th March:  black bags, gloves, tabbards, and litter pickers will be provided.  So come and lend a hand, even for half an hour.  Children are welcome, preferably with a well behaved adult in tow, and will be kept clear of roads.  The Primary School will be designing some posters on this subject, you can see them in both shops, the Post Office.   If anyone wants to do their own thing and litter collect outwith the set times, please let me know.  The Howwood Inn is kindly providing soup and sandwiches for all the helpers, both days. We will have a skip in the Village Hall car park on the weekend of 29th/30th March, bags can be picked up and taken back there, by those who have volunteered the use of their vans.  We live in a pleasant village, in attractive countryside:  have some pride and keep it that way.
TANZANIA HERE I COME!:  One youngster is preparing to go to Africa to do voluntary work at the Aramani Centre for Disabled children in Morogoro in the Uluguru mountains (what a splendid name!)  It is part of her “Citizen Programme” at Johnstone High School.  However, in order to go along with 21 other pupils and 4 staff members, she needs sponsorship.  Can you help?  Do you know anyone or any group who could sponsor.  If so please contact Rachael Mckenzie, either by phoning 703 295, or emailing  smimi_1@hotmail.com, or leaving a note at Howwood Post Office.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG:
or so it seems.  Sunday was a beautiful day after so much awful weather, it was a pleasure to be outside in the garden for a change, and the first Bumble Bees were out looking for pollen.  However, do remember the old saying "ne'er cast a cloot till May is oot":  the May being the May blossom (Hawthorn) of course, with its very distinctive smell, not the month of May.  With that in mind......
SPRING CLEAN:  the annual litter picking/clean up of the village is coming. As a recent survey carried out by Keep Scotland Beautiful revealed, 46% of those asked admitted to dropping litter:  no wonder there is so much, in what is nothing short of a national sickness.   If anyone wants to do their own thing and litter collect outwith the set times, please let me know.  We will have a skip in the Village Hall car park on the weekend of 29th/30th March, bags can be picked up and taken back there, by those who have volunteered the use of their vans.  We live in a pleasant village, in attractive countryside:  have some pride and keep it that way.
HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH EASTER SERVICES:  Holy Week  (Monday17th until Friday 21st) there will be a short service at 7.30pm, and on Wedneday 19th March a celebration of a Passover Meal, again at 7.30pm.  Easter Sunday (23rd March) the open air service in the park will take place at 9.30pm, all welocme, followed by breakfast in the Church Hall. The Family service to celebrate the Ressurection of Jesus will be at 11am.

GIVING UP SOMETHING FOR LENT:
whether you are a believing Christian or not, there is value of doing with out things for the 40 days and nights of Lent, in order to make the world a better place. For example the TV presenter Sally Magnusson is doing her bit to reduce her "carbon footprint": that is the amount to carbon being put into the atmosphere, that is contributing to climate change, which hits poor countries especially hard. One simple way: refuse all those plastic bags that you are offered in the shops, and use aown re-useable canvass bag. All those plastic bags have been made by using up the earth's scarce resources, and end up in land fill sites. So go green for lent, and stop using plastic bags all the time. Hopefully the habit will stick.
SIGNS OF SPRING?: a few dry, sunny days make all the difference. The crocuses and snowdrops come out, and we all feel better! Unfortunately Grey Squirrels are a wee bit partial to eating these bulbs, and the display in the park has been decimated by them. See the thanks you get for trying to brighten the place up!
SCOTTISH EVENING: went very well: around 62 senior citizens present, and 3 of our Councillors with their wife/husband (John Hood is recovering from a serious illness). Thanks to all who put in so much effort to make it such an enjoyable evening, and to our entertainers: namely the Clyde Coast Strathspey and Fiddle Society, and the Royal Scottish Country Dance Association (Ayr Branch).
HOWWOOD WRI: meets Tuesday 19th February at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, all welcome: when Mr & Mrs Fennel will be speaking about Alpacas in Scotland.
HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH GUILD: meets Monday 25th February at 7.45pm in the church hall when Juliet Robb with gifts from Palestine, will speak about "The Olive Tree"

RENEWABLE ENERGY:
is an "in" subject, but the interest is moving towards wave and tidal power and more hydro schemes and away from large intrusive windfarms, whether they be planned for Clyde Muirshiel Country Park or for Lewis. There is free advice out there on small scale community schemes, and ways you can reduce the energy you use in your home, and how you can access renewable sources of energy, such as solar panels, or photo voltaic tiles. The Community Council invited a speaker from Energy Wise Trust to give a talk at a special meeting on 15th January. Unfortunately it had to move location, and start earlier because of work being done on the Village Hall, so some of those attending missed the first part of the talk. If anyone needs more information: you can contact the Energy Efficiency Advice Centre on 0141 552 0799.

SCOTTISH EVENING: Saturday 9th February 2008 at 6.00pm in the Village Hall. As before, any Howwood resident 60 years of age or older can attend; there will be food, drink, and entertainment. This time from the Largs & District Fiddle Orchestra, and the Royal Scottish Country Dance Association (Ayr Branch), all for 75p. Last chance for tickets from Linda in the Post Office. Also if you need a lift to and from the evening, please let Linda know so we can arrange that for you.
HOWWOD PARISH CHURCH GUILD: meets Monday 11th February at 7.45pm in the church hall when John Stewart will talk about "CHICKS" (Country Holidays for Inner City Kids).
HOWWOOD COMMUNITY COUNCIL: meets Tuesday 12th February at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, all welcome; please let me know if you wish an item to appear on the agenda.

WATER REPAIRS:
the sewer is to be replaced in Station Avenue, work will take 4 weeks, but there should be no road closure, and no interruption of water supply.  All householders should have received notification.
KEEP SCOTLAND BEAUTIFUL:  sadly not something that nearly half the population are bothered about.  They did a survey recently, and 46% of those asked admitted they dropped litter, in full knowledge that it was illegal.  It carries a fine of £50, o that someone would enforce it, but it certainly helps to explain why there is so much of the stuff despoiling the countryside almost everywhere you go.  It suggests we are not that proud to be Scottish, and not that concerned about the environment.
ROBERT BURNS BIRTHDAY:  happened last week, despite the above revelation, I hope you toasted the bard in some way or another:  his social commentary, and understanding of the human condition remain as relevant now as it was when he wrote, next year will be the 250th anniversary of his birth.  Here is a quote:  "The best laid schemes o' mice and men gang aft a-gley, An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain, for promis'd joy!" Look up a copy of his poems, and find our where this one comes from, if you don't know already.
Tickets from Linda in the Post Office are now on sale.

HOWWOOD PLAYGROUP:
is looking for new kids to come along. So if you are a parent with a child who is aged between two and a half and five, why not go along to the Village Hall on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between 9.45 and 11.30 in the morning, and make yourself known to Kate or Fiona. Alternatively you can get more details from Karen on 01505 705643. The Village Hall is back in full use, after its floor refurbishment.

HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH GUILD: meets on Monday 28th January in the Church Hall at 7.45pm, when the Reverend David Stewart will be speaking about his visit to Malawi.
Tickets from Linda in the Post Office are now on sale.
WILDLIFE by the BLACK CART: with all the rain, and the work on the new path from St Bryde's Bridge to the Fancy Bridge, there was no-one walking along the river last week, when I was there with our dogs. As a result there was a large flock of Canada Geese  , a small flock of Whooper Swans, some Mute Swans, lots of duck, waders, and even four roe deer bounding across the fields. If you can, get out and see some wildlife, it will lift your spirits at this gloomy time of year; and as I discovered we have an abundance on our doorstep.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL MEETING:
we had a representative from the Environmental Services Department of Renfrewshire Council present (Andy Summers). The intention is that he or a colleague, will attend every 3 months, so we can address any relevant matters to them directly. There was agreement in principle from them, that the Council would support any improvements to the Park, that we can raise funds for. So the next step will be to survey public opinion in the village, and a survey will go out with the next newsletter, asking people what facilities they would use; although we are limited by what can fit into the existing area, without encroaching on the football field. The survey will put suggestions before you, and we are looking to hear which ones you would use. Sadly the playground is being vandalised again, I am loath to give the culprits the oxygen of publicity, but ask that if you see anyone damaging it, phone the Police immediately. There is no point seeking any reason behind their actions, just do your bit to put a stop to it, so kids can enjoy what has been built for them.

Tickets from Linda in the Post Office are now on sale.
FETE: further into the year, we have set Saturday 21st June, as the day for the Village Fete. We are looking into potential attractions, including getting the show people who provide the rides at the Johnstone Festival to come along. Clearly ours is a much smaller event, so there is much negotiating to be done before that is definite; but we want to make it a fun day for everyone, without knackering ourselves!

A GUID NE'ER TAE A'BODY, AND MONY MAY YE SEE:
NEW YEAR WALK: took place last Saturday, and a few hardy souls braved the elements to walk to the "Temple" and back. I was not one of them, too wet and wild for me, or the dogs. The new path being built from St Bride's bridge to the Fancy bridge is well under way, and Saturday's walkers, would have had a good view of it. It will mean people can walk from the Cycleway down to the Black Cart, and on to the Scottish Water access road that goes past Elliston Weir, as far as the lay-by at Garthland Bridge. The Community Council will be putting pressure on to get a pavement the short distance from the village to Garthland bridge, with safe pedestrian and cycle access over the bridge, to link the village to this new path. hopefully we will succeed.
HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH: has had its bell refurbished and restored to working order. It was previously worked by pulling a rope but that system was not reliable. The bell has been fitted with an electric bell clapper after donations were received. It will once again be possible to hear the bell tolling not only for special occasions but also prior to Sunday worship at 11am. I heard it two Sundays ago, and what a pleasant peaceful sound it was; I guess more will become aware of it, as the days lengthen and people are out in their gardens. I think it adds to the country village feel that Howwood has, nearly as good as hearing the first Willow Warbler!
HOWWOOD PARISH GUILD: meets on Monday 14th January in the Church Hall at 7.45pm, the evening is entitled "On our own".
HOWWOOD WRI: meets the following evening, Tuesday 15th January at 7.30pm, for a cookery demonstration from Mrs Rae Hutchison. I would guess they are meeting in the Church Hall, because the Village Hall is getting its floor repaired. Check with a committee member to confirm the venue, if you are planning to attend.
ENERGY SAVING: climate change and energy awareness are highly relevant topics. A speaker from the energy efficiency advice centre is coming to Howwood on Tuesday 15th January. This meeting has had to be re-arranged, so will now be in the Primary School, Semple View at 7.30pm. The speaker will be Neil Philips, who will explain about renewable technologies, that s and individuals or community group can install.

HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH:
services over Christmas are as follows. Sunday 16th December at 11am is a service of carols and readings lead by the choir; Sunday 23rd again at 11am will be a Children's carol and nativity service. The Christmas Eve service (Monday 24th) of carols and readings will be at 7pm, followed by tea and mince pies; and the Christmas Day service will a family service, starting at 10.30am.
CHRISTMAS LIGHTS: two of the strings are not working, this has been reported to the Council, and hopefully will be shining bright again soon.COMMUNITY COUNCIL MEETING: the Johnstone Area Policing Inspector John Laing attended the December meeting, along with one of our regular Community Polcing Officers. He was able to explain some of the policing decisions that affect our Community including the centralised call centres. The meeting pointed out that it can be discouraging to have to explain where Howwood is, when one phones a distant centre! The centres (which are in Govan and Motherwell) do however manage to answer calls from the public far more quickly, and release more officers to do the job we expect of them. Inspector Laing said that he plans to change shift patterns, so more officers are on duty at "peak times", and he hopes to make Community Wardens, and a mobile CCTV van available to the villages of Renfrewshire. The force has also recruited more Alcohol Test Purchase Officers, in an effort to cut down on illegal sales of alcohol to youngsters. I would say it was encouraging to hear form such an enthusiastic and committed senior officer. There is apparently a huge under reporting of crimes, especially from people who have been bothered on their own doorstep. Please have another look at the crime advice on the back of the December newsletter. NEW HOUSE at THORNTREE COTTAGE: people will have noticed that the old cottage is away. The previous owners got permission for its demolition, then sold it on. The new owners had it demolished, and the site awaits development. They will be lodging their plans soon, but the plans sound far more sympathetic to the village, than the previous ones. The house is to be more Scottish and traditional in appearance. HOWWOOD INN: their Christmas Calendar is as follows. Saturday 22nd December: Christmas Carol Concert from 4pm, for all the family, around the fire, mulled wine and mince pies. Christmas Eve: Disco Dave from 9pm till late. Christmas Day limited places were left for lunch, but phone 01505 703119 to confirm that is still the case: drinks served from mid-day for the village.

NEW YEAR WALK: will be on Saturday 5th January, meet 1pm in the "Triangle". Dogs with well behaved owners welcome, route to be decided depending on the weather: there will be a treasure hunt aspect to get your brain working on this walk. Happy Christmas and a Guid Ne'er when it comes.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS:
were switched on, and it did not rain for the second year running! There was an excellent turn out of people: some weel kent faces, lots of parents with young kids, the minister; and a contingent of Johnstone Silver Band, who played carols until their fingers were too cold to hit the notes. Most people managed to join in. We are very grateful to the band, and to the Kirk for their hospitality afterwards. Leoni McFadden pressed the button, to turn the lights on, and they look as good as they did last year. I can see a suggestion coming forward at the next Community Council meeting (Tuesday 12th December), for more lights to be purchased, so more tree can be alluminated next year.
KEEP YOUR PIPES WARM: at this time of year there is always a possibility of frosts, and there is nothing worse than coming home to a burst pipe, especially if you have been away over Christmas. There are simple ways you can reduce the risk: keep the heating on low, alternatively drain the system and turn off the water supply if you are going way for a longer period. Insulate your water tank properly; attend to things such as dripping taps, and cold draughts, both of which increase the risk of freezing. A good plumber can advise on all these things: details of a such a person can be found at www.needaplumber.org or by phoning 0845 224 0391. If you would like a leaflet from Scottish Water with advice on how to protect your house from cold weather, go to www.scottishwater.co.uk/warmpipes or call the customer helpline 0845 601 8855. The burst mains in Main Street, and outside Braefoot Station Road have been reported, but unfortunately no-one has been out to repair.
ROAD REPAIRS: Scott Allan from the Council's roads department was able to advise about the following at last week's CC meeting. Disruption because of work at the Roadhead roundabout should not be great before Christmas, but in February and March traffic will be taken through in "convoys", so there will be delays. They are still looking into the cost of a "speed table" for the notorious Bowfield /Hill Road junction, and at resurfacing Mayfield Drive and Crescent after April 2008. REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY:
was very well attended, by a large number of Howwood residents, and by Councillors past and present. It was a cold dry day, the garden had been tidied up by Renfrewshire Council, and by some public minded people from the village. The cyclamen looked lovely. Thanks to all who took part: the Minister, the brownies and rainbows and their leaders, Alexis for accompanying and trumpet playing, Morvern for piping a particularly fine rendition of the "Flowers of the Forest" , but most of all to all who attended and remembered those brave men and women, who do the bidding of Governments and serve our country in armed conflicts.
HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH: are having their Christmas Fair on Saturday 17th November from 10 am. Entrance fee entitles you to your refreshment. The Guild meets on Monday 19th November at 7.45pm in the Church Hall, when the Salvation Army will give a musical presentation. Congratulations to them, and hope the pond clean up went well on Monday. Johnstone Silver band will be present, to lead carol singing, and the Kirk is inviting everyone back for tea and mince pies afterwards.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY:
this year Sunday is the 11th November.  There will be a short service at the war memorial at 12.30pm, conducted by the Reverend David Stewart.  Everyone is invited, whether or not they are religious, and whatever their religion may be, to remember those  who have given their lives in defence of Britain in two world wars, and we need to remember those brave men and women who have served, and are still serving in subsequent conflicts such as Iraq.  Also a sign will be going up on Bowfield Road, to point out where the memorial and garden are, but it will not be up by next weekend.

HOWWOOD SPORTS & HOBBIES GROUP:   are holding their annual Christmas Fete with Santa's Grotto, on Friday 30th November from 7pm until 9pm in the Village Hall.  Spaces are limited, so if you want a table to sell things contact Fiona soon on 842179.  Otherwise, turn up and enjoy the fair, and spend some money!ROADS:  work is due to start on the Roadhead roundabout and last until February, with a two week break over Christmas and New Year.  So be prepared for delays, or take an alternative "A" route, if you are going that way to Lochwinnoch, places in Ayrshire and beyond.  The blocked drain, where the path from Kirkfield Wynd joins the pavement on Beith Road, will be cleared!  I have it in writing, so no more flooding there;  now someone needs to come out and fix the burst main near the new shop!  At present one is likely to get a free shower from passing traffic charging through the water, should you cross Main Street, in that vicinity.  Be prepared.RACE NIGHT:  was not well attended, which was disappointing:  but those who were there, spent plenty of money.  In the end over £300 will be raised and go towards doing up the "Rhombus " garden, so a big thanks to all who supported the event, bought horses, sponsored races, and gave up their time to organise the evening.  Thanks also to Midton Bowling club, for use of their premises, and to Finbarr, George, Kay and Michael for running the races.BULB PLANTING:   went well.  The rain kindly waited until we were nearly finished both days.  13 people helped on Saturday, and 2 did their own thing tidying up the remembrance garden.  Bulbs were not planted there, as the Council has said they might re-plant the whole area.  If they don't we will keep insisting they maintain it to a higher standard than they have. The areas planted were Beith Road between the cottages and the village, with daffodils;  in front of the Hall, with Daffs and wee tulips;  and along Midton Road in the park below the Birch tress with crocuses.  11 helpers on Sunday, crocuses opposite the Post Office, and the "Triangle" area tidied.  It is a poor show that the standard of maintenance by the Council is so poor;  but sometimes its better to get stuck in and do it yourself, if complaints are likely to fall on deaf ears.  Many thanks to those who did help, the place will definitely look more cheerful because of your efforts.

22/10/2007
HWW Race Night: Friday 26th Midton Bowling Club @ 7.30pm. To raise money for the "Rhombus Garden" rennovations. Please attend and bring friends and family, tickets from myself or Robert & Christine.

Bulb Planting: Sat 27th and Sun 28th , meet 2pm both days in the "Triangle" . Please give up a few hours of your weekend, one day if you cannot manage both. Do not go away for the weekend, or be otherwise occupied. Many hands make light work, no show makes it a chore for the few. Bring friends and family, if you can.

THE COMMUNITY COUNCIL AGM:
passed off quietly.  In fact there was a spectacular lack of attendance from anyone who was not on the CC or  who was not a committee member of Howwood Wildlife and Woodlands (apart from one member's wife).   We are required to hold AGMs, much effort goes into them, and indeed all the work throughout the year;  Joe Waclawski from Environmental Services attended as a guest speaker.  It is really disappointing that there is so little interest from the wider community.  Especially when you think how quickly people turn up full of indignation when there is something they disagree with.  Please note:  HWW is turning the area opposite the Howwood Inn into a woodland garden, the plan will be on display;  HCC will be submitting a view on the traffic management and parking plan for the centre os the village, sent to us by the Council's Roads Department.  Anyone can criticise things once they have been done, its the easiest thing in the world:  it would be much more useful to make constructive comments beforehand, although that of course requires some mental effort.
BULB PLANTING:  talking about being constructive.  We have purchased spring flowering bulbs, to brighten up the appearance of the village, once we emerge from the gloom of winter.  This we will be doing in several public spaces in the village, including the war memorial garden.  All assistance, especially from able bodied petition signers furious at the very suggestion of moving the memorial, will be gratefully received.  Meet at 2pm on Sat 27th and Sun 28th October,  in the "Triangle" between Station Road and Main Street. RACE NIGHT:  is being held on Friday 26th October in the Midton Bowling Club at 7.30pm, to raise money for the woodland garden mentioned above.  Tickets cost £2.50, available from the Post Office.  Why not purchase a horse beforehand, and potentially win the prize for that race?  Contact Christine & Robert for further details Tel 01505 704083.   BUS ROUTES:  the 33 Stagecoach Service from Ayr to Braehead that stops in Howwood, will not now be going on to Braehead, but stopping/starting in the centre of Paisley.  Also the times have changed. Linda has some timetables in the Post Office.  Various road repairs are scheduled for the A737, and slip roads for the M8, between now and Hogmannay.  So allow extra time for car journeys. CONGRATULATIONS:  to Councillor Tracie McGee, on the birth of a baby daughter;   and speedy recovery to Councillor John Hood, who has been in hospital.   Sadly no congrats to the Scotland Rugby team, but hoping our football boys do the business for Scotland against Ukraine and Georgia.

CHRISTIAN AID COFFEE MORNING & BOOK SALE:  will take place in Johnstone Town Hall on Saturday 13th October from 10am until 12 noon.  tickets are priced at £1.50, available from Georgie Inglis beforehand, or at the door.

REASONS to be CHEERFUL:
Howwood Sports  & Hobbies and Howwood Community Council were successful in their grant application to the local (Johnstone) area grant board.  The money the Sports & Hobbies received will enable them to continue in operation, as a very popular club for teenagers in the village, running every Thursday evening in the village hall.  The Community Council have been granted money to purchase a Public Address System, which can be used inside and out.  So any future public meetings should be more audible to those attending, it will be put to immediate use at next year's Scottish Evening for senior citizens.  However the difference at outdoor events will be most marked:  namely the Fete, Remembrance Sunday, Christmas Lights and Carol service, where those speaking at an event struggle to be heard, and public annoucements are almost impossible.  I would like to express our thanks to our elected Councillors, Tracie McGee, Iain McMillan, John Caldwell and John Hood for making these awards.  The fact that all of them represent us, and all show an active interest in our community, is perhaps a benefit of being part of a larger ward;  and it is encouraging that they do not seem to go in for scoring "political" points off each other.
FITNESS CLASS:   a new class is starting in the Village Hall on Tuesday evenings at 8pm, incase you did not get a leaflet, or see the posters.  Emma McCrystal is the instructor (Tel. 07900606240), classes cost £4.50 each.THE COMMUNITY COUNCIL will hold its AGM on Friday 5th October, when the speaker will be Joe Waclawski from Renfrewshire Council's Environmental Services.  He will be giving a talk and demonstration on "Autumn Gardening".  This will be to launch the Community Council's "Best Village Garden" competition for August 2008, for which we hope we have many enthusiastic entrants.  All welcome to attend, and we should all learn something from Joe, who used to be in charge of the Council's horticulture section.  HOWWOOD WILDLIFE and WOODLANDS will also hold its AGM at this meeting, starting at 7.30pm.  Tea and biscuits will be served at "half-time". DEMOLITION of a LANDMARK:  unfortunately one of the oldest houses in the village (Thorntree Cottage) in Midton Road is about to disappear for ever.  Its former owners were successful in getting planning permission to knock it down, and build a new house.  They have since sold it to someone else, with the same planning permission:  the Community Council objected at the time, but the decision by the Planning Department was that the state of disrepair was such, that pulling it down was the "best" option.  Howwood has a mixture of building styles and houses of all sorts of ages.  We are not a conservation village, and the wee house despite its venerable age, was not considered a listed building.  I think it is a great shame that it could not be modernised while keeping its traditional appearance, but thats progress for you!  Traffic may be affected on Midton Road, but it is at a place where cars have to travel carefully anyway, so disturbance will hopefully be minimal. CHRISTIAN AID COFFEE MORNING & BOOK SALE:  will take place in Johnstone Town Hall on Saturday 13th October from 10am until 12 noon.  tickets are priced at £1.50, available from Georgie Inglis beforehand, or at the door.

AUTUMN WALK
: Howwood Wildlife and Woodlands will be doing another walk on Saturday 29th September. We plan to walk from the village (meet at 1pm in the "Triangle") on the "Orange Route" as described in the walks leaflet, which will take you up Bowfield Road, through Linister Glaen, past Earlshill Farm to Newton of Belltrees, and on to Lochwinnoch Station. Dress appropriately for the weather, and dogs welcome as long as you have well behaved owners. What better way to get to know the lovely countryside on our doorstep, you could even do a spot of Bramble picking, if the weather is nice; hard to beat a home made bramble and apple pie, or bramble jeely

THE COMMUNITY COUNCIL will hold its AGM on Friday 5th October, when the speaker will be Joe Waclawski from Renfrewshire Council's Environmental Services.

HOWWOOD PARISH GUILD: starts up its winter programme on Monday 8th October with a talk form the minister (David Stewart". The Guild meets every second monday evening at 7.45pm in the church hall, all welcome.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY: the Community Council is looking forward to the war memorial being better maintained, and I would remind readers that the Remembrance Sunday falls on November 11th this year, the service at the war memorial in Bowfield Road will be at 12.30pm, to co-incide with end of church services church at the parish church and at Christ the King. Christ the king is soon to get a new priest: so we wish Father Joseph Balmer all the best in his new charge in Port Glasgow, and offer a warm welcome to the new priest Father Joseph Dow. Hopefully he will be able to join the minister David Stewart in leading the Howwood Remembrance service.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS: provisional arrangements have also been made for the Christmas Lights to be tunred on on the evening of Friday 7th December, and Johnstone Silver band had been invited to play carols.

16/09/2007
TRAFFIC around the TRIANGLE
:  there have been many concerns expressed in the past over pedestrian safety, the speed of traffic in the middle of the village, and poor visibility at road junctions.  As a result of which the Community Council asked the Council to suggest a solution to address these concerns.  The Roads Department have now asked the Community Council to gather the views of residents;  that is the reason for this consultation.  The proposals can be seen on the Website, in the Post Office, on the notice board, and in the shops.   So far there  have been a number of replies from those most likely to be directly affected, but we would like to hear from other residents of the village, particularly those living in Main Street, Beith Road  (heading west), and Station Road.  The aim is to make the village safer.

LAST CHANCE TO SEE THE QE2:  the QE2 is visiting Greenock on Thursday 20th September, 40 years after her launch at John Brown's shipyard Clydebank.  You can join a tour from Howwood to go and see her, leaving the village at 3.45pm:  price £23, which includes the £15 cost of a ticket to board the ship for a short cruise.  Full details from Craig on 01505 704440.

WAR MEMORIAL:   recently our elected Councillors had a look at the garden of remembrance and the war memorial, and seem to have got from the Council an admission that the area has been neglected, and an agreement that in future the garden will be better maintained, and repairs will be carried out to the masonry.  Part of the bulb planting that we will be doing on 27th and 28th October will be in the remembrance garden, and it will be a good opportunity to see that it is looking its best for the Remembrance Sunday service in November.  The more helpers who are prepared to come out and help, rather than complain and do nothing, the more that can be accomplished.

NEW NURSERY:  unfortunately plans to convert part of 2 Dreadnought Buildings into a childrens' nursey were turned down recently by the Council's planning department.  There were  some concerns over parking and extra traffic, but the main reason seems to have been noise, and that the site was unsuitable.  The Community Council thought that it would be a very convenient site for people, and that this facility would have been popular.

THE COMMUNITY COUNCIL will hold its AGM on Friday 5th October, when the speaker will be Joe Waclawski from Renfrewshire Council's Environmental Services.

09/09/2007
HOWWOOD CHURCH WALKING GROUP:
are planning an outing this Saturday 15th September.  Meet at 1pm at the church;  route to be decided, depending on weather conditions.  All welcome.

GARDENING GALORE:  firstly:  HOWWOOD WRI starts it programme for the 2007/8 season, on Tuesday 18th September.  The speaker will be John Kinloch who will talk on "Gardens I have visited"  Meetings are held in the Village Hall, starting at 7.30pm.  In a similar vein the COMMUNITY COUNCIL will hold its AGM on Friday 5th October, when the speaker will be Joe Waclawski from Renfrewshire Council's Environmental Services.  He will be giving a talk and demonstration on things you can be doing in the garden at this time of year.  This will be to launch the Community Council's "Best Village Garden" competition for August 2008, for which we hope we have many enthusiastic entrants.  All welcome to attend, and we should all learn something from Joe, who used to be in charge of the Council's horticulture section.

COMPOSTING & RECYCLING:  do you have a compost bin?  Recently households got a leaflet offering a plastic compost bin for a mere £6, which is a good offer.  There are clear instructions on what to put in your compost and what not to put in.  You will be making compost to feed the plants in your garden, and help reduce the 900,000 tonnes of organic waste Scotland produces each year.  Enough to fill Hampden Park 18 times, apparently. To order a compost bin tel. 0845 077 0756;  to get more information tel.  0845 600 0323;  or go the website:   www.wasteawarescotland.org.uk.  There is another sound reason to recycle, apart  from doing your bit for the environment, which I learnt at a recent Community Council forum.  We will have to, or else be penalised.  Each country in the European union has been given a quota of how much waste has to be reduced, that in turn is split up into a quota for each Council area (Renfrewshire for us).  If that quota is not met, then that country has to pay 500,000 Euros per day!  That will be passed on to the Council's who have not kept to their quotas, and if that is our Council, we all end up paying!  Bit of a shock, but sometimes drastic measures are needed to get people to tidy up their act.  Britain has been the dirty man of Europe, for some time.  If anyone needs more recycling boxes, just call in at the depot in Underwood Road Paisley, and you can collect another blue bin, or green box.  You can also get another Brown bin, if you are making lots of garden waste, that cannot be composted.  They are not so easy to fit in the boot of a car, so you might need to arrange delivery, but the Council will be happy to help, if you can get through on the phone.

03/09/2007
RHOMBUS GARDEN:
the more observant of you will have seen that the area opposite the Howwood Inn looks rather different.  The tree surgeons were in last week, and now we can see the wood from the trees, or the ones that are left!  The plan is to have two tarmac paths from Beith Road leading to a seating area, and then bark paths  leading to a willow or hazel bower at the Midton Road end.  The bark paths will lead on to a boardwalk that will go up the side of the area, beside the park.  The hazel/willow bower, will also act as a sort of outdoor classroom, and with seats into the bank made from sleepers.  We will be asking the Primary School to come up with names for the different paths, and help choose what trees to plant, now that the area has been cleared.

OPEN DOORS:  next weekend (Sat 8th and Sunday 9th), is Renfrewshire Open Doors weekend, and various buildings in Paisley, and throughout the county will be open for you to take a look around, free of charge.  Our village parish church, with its fine stained glass windows will be open from 1pm until 4pm.  for more information go to the website www.doorsopendays.org.uk or call 0141 248 1188.  There is some wonderful architecture locally, and I hope people take this chance to see it.

CURLING:  ever thought of taking up Curling this winter?  Greenacres Ice Rink is right on our doorstep, and they will be running an after schools club every Monday from 4.15pm until 5.45pm, starting on 10th September.  There is also the Greenacres young culrlers who meet every Saturday morning 8.15am until 10.15am, starting 8th September.  The 92s specials would suit day time adult curlers of any or no experience, they meet every fortnight starting Wednesday 26th September at 12.15pm.  There are free "come and try" sessions on Saturday 22nd September;  and finally for existing players there will be a drop in clinic most Fridays 4.30pm until 6pm starting 7th September, for which the charge is only £4.  For more details contact David Horne on 07921057138 or e-mail david@royalcaledoniancurlingclub.  Finally, finally:  details of Howwood Curling Club can be found by going to the website www.howwoodcurlingclub.co.uk

CHARITY AUCTION: seems to have been a great success, over £3,000 raised or St Vincent's Hospice.  Well done Karen and everyone at the Howwood Inn!

28/08/2007
FLOWER TUB:
you may have noticed that we have had bright flowers decorating a large flower tub below the "Howwood" road signs, as you enter the village, at each point. The idea was to make a cheerful welcome that people would see coming into the village. On the whole it worked: Howwood Wildlfie & Woodlands raised the money, got permission from the roads department for them to be installed and secured onto the poles of the "Howwood" signs. We maintained them through the summer, which was not too hard because its been so wet!. The one on Station Road was not too cheerful, because all the plants were stolen; once after they were just planted up in June, and again a few days later! We didn't bother buying a third set of plants, so the vandals/thieves won there. Also the Cordoline was stolen out of the tub opposite Elliston Farm, which seemed incredibly mean on the part of the tea leaf who nicked it, but sadly thats the society we live in. At least 3 of the 5 tubs made it through the summer unscathed.

ROADS: The Roads Department have come up with a traffic management plan for the roads around the "Triangle". In short it would mean 'H' bars being painted across the entrances to Braefoot, Fountainview, Dreadnought Buildings and 4 Station Road, to stop people parking across their driveway or garage; and the removal of the right hand turn lane in Main Street, and the bringing forward of the junction of Station Road and Main Street to improve drivers vision of oncoming traffic. We will be consulting as widely as possible. If you have ideas on what should be included or omitted from this plan, we need to know by Monday 10th September. All Community Councillors have a copy, and copies of the plan arerin the shops, noticeboard, and on the Website.

ENVIRONMENT: Does everyone know that they can take their rubbish to the Amenity Site in Miller Street Johnstone? I will cost you nothing, and is a lot easier than driving into the countryside where your rubbish will pollute and spoil the landscape. Telephone 0141 840 3252 for more information and directions if you don't know where the site is, or 0141 840 3655 if you need household equipment or furniture taken away for you. There is a charge, but not a large one; then it is all done legitimately, and no harm done to the countryside.

WAR MEMORIAL:
the suggestion to moving the war memorial to a more prominent site, has been dropped. The Community Council will however be lobbying for the existing site to be better maintained than it has been, and will seek signage on Bowfield Road, to make it clear where the memorial and garden are. Only this week, there was a visitor in the village looking for the memorial, he had a relative named on it. We could always tidy the Memorial garden up ourselves, at the same time as we will be planting more bulbs in public open spaces, the weekend of 27/28th October. That way we can be sure it will be looking neat for the armistice day service. If we do that I hope more people come out and help, especially some of you guys up in arms about the idea of the memorial being moved. In the past precious few could be bothered to help in the autumn bulb planting/clear up.
ROADS: Midton Road is to have the 30mph limit pushed out towards the Hospice, and it will become 20s plenty in front of Kilnknowe Cottages. Thats the good news, the bad news is not before the next financial year (April 2008). Also it looks like there could be a solution to the Hill Road/ Bowfield Road junction, a "road table" which would be built in the road at this point, but it needs to be costed and approved. Also the arrival of the Community Speed Watch scheme to Howwood is becoming more likely, and a "Route Action Plan" for Main Street and Beith Road, will be produced by Renfrewshire Council as long as money is allocated from the budget. The Roads Department have come up with a traffic management plan for the roads around the "Triangle". If you have ideas on what should be included or omitted from this plan, let us know. All Community Councillors have a copy, and copies of the plan will appear in the shops, noticeboard, and on the Website. We greatly appreciate that Scott Allan from the Roads Department, reschedules his time to come to our meetings every 3 months, as we do the constructive part played by our elected members, in these and other matters. If you are aware of flooding/blocked drains on the roads, let us know the exact location, so we can pass the information on, thank you. Finally, work is due to start on the Roadhead roundabout near Lochwinnoch on 10th September. When the work starts, expect delays and extra traffic through Howwood.ENVIRONMENT: thanks once again to those responsible for the new litter bins in the village. Fly tipping continues to be rife in the loanings around the village. Does everyone know that they can take their rubbish to the Amenity Site in Miller Street Johnstone? I will cost you nothing, and is a lot easier than driving into the countryside where your rubbish will pollute and spoil the landscape. Telephone 0141 840 3252 for more information and directions if you don't know where the site is, or 0141 840 3655 if you need household equipment or furniture taken away for you. There is a charge, but not a large one; then it is all done legitimately, and no harm done to the countryside.DANCE CLASS: J & D School of Dance & Drama classes start back on Tuesday, 21st August from 4pm to 7.30pm at Howwood Village Hall. WAR MEMORIAL:
let me be clear, it is a suggestion to move the war memorial to a more prominent place, nothing has been decided, at all. Some people have said it might be a good idea, others are vehemently opposed to any such idea. Out of the initial opinions, one very good idea has come forward: simply put up sign posts on Bowfield Road, to show where the war memorial is. That way everyone becomes aware of it, if they did not know in the first place. It is certainly not the easiest place to find. It would also save a long and potentially contentious process; which certainly seems to have happened, when a committee decided on a Nurse's House as the First War Memorial, (the war memorial with those who fell in the second world war, is on the site of the former district nurse's house). Craig Crawford gave me a copy of the excellent poem, that tells the tale of the committee's deliberations. It would be good to avoid what they seem to have gone through: people offended, falling out with each other, and going off in the huff. That is certainly not the aim: I was reminded how much we owe to those who did, and are serving in the armed forces on a recent visit to the Netherlands and the Dutch Museum of Liberation, where I was looking for information about my father's regiment, which was part of the Second Rhine Crossing. If people are happy with the memorial where it is, thats fine; but I think clear signs and a good tidy up of the garden around the memorial are called for. If you have any other thoughts, there is the suggestion box in the Post Office, or the Website www.Howwood.com. Thank you for your thoughts up to date.

PARK: no progress to report. We are still waiting to hear back from Renfrewshire Council about potential improvements to the Public Park. The first letter got lost somewhere on its way to Cotton Street, or in the "system"; the e-mail that followed was not dealt with before the holiday season, which I learnt after yet another e-mail asking why the first one had not been answered. Its never easy dealing with officialdom, but we should have some sort of answer in time for the August Community Council meeting, which is on Tuesday 14th August, 7.30pm in the village Hall. Meanwhile, the area opposite the Howwood Inn (Rhombus Garden, so named because of its shape), has now had the Japanese Knotweed treated several times, and a tree surgeon should start work soon, to clear away much of the undergrowth, so we can see the wood and the trees, and where a path, play area and seating area could go.

HOLIDAY CLUB: the Church is running this week ( Monday 6th August until Friday 11th). All Primary school age kids are welcome; just turn up at the Church Hall in Beith Road, next door to the Church, at 10am each morning.

CHARITY AUCTION: Karen Lafferty is organising a Charity auction night, to raise funds for St Vincents Hospice. It will be held in the Howwood Inn on Friday 31st August. POLLING ARRANGEMENTS
: Renfrewshire Council is carrying out a review of Polling Districts and Polling Places. Our Polling District is Howwood, no surprises there, but it means all the households who vote in one place. For us that is everyone in the village, and some outlying houses and farms. Our Polling Place is the Village Hall. If people have any views on the boundaries of Howwood Polling District or the suitability of the Village Hall as a Polling Place, let me know asap. We have not been given much time: our response needs to be in by monday 13th August. The next Community Council meeting will be Tuesday 14th August: main item to go on the agenda is Roads, so we will be looking for progress on measures to slow traffic down in the village, as well as various maintenance issues. People are welcome to attend the meeting, but if there is a particular item, you would like included on the agenda, please let me know beforehand.

WALK: Sunday was a good day weather wise. Dry and not too warm. 8 people and 6 dogs did the long walk over Whittliemuir (10 kms), and back past the trout loch. Wesecured two way markers, and put up some more discs with an arrow, which will hopefully make the way across open country (Hartfield Moss) clearer. On a day like sundya the views across towards Ben Lomond, and the Highland Hills were wonderful. If you are doing the walk yourself, allow 3 hours.

HOLIDAY CLUB: the Church is running this event again from monday 6th August until Friday 11th.

If you can help by donating prizes, please contact Karen (tel: 703119). It is an evening event, and for a very good cause. Please see if you can attend.

CONCERT: went very well, plenty of people there, and the band themselves enjoyed it, and are looking forward to coming back next year. Thanks to Robert & Christine for organising it, the Church for letting us use their building, the church ladies for providing tea, and the Glasgow Wind Band themselves for a fantastic varied evening of music from all sorts of places, in different moods. For example we had Danny Boy in one part of the programme, Pirates of the Carribean in another, Verdi's Anvil chorus near the end, compared to "Blues Brothers" at the end of the first half. Anyone that heard them, will not be surprised that they have been Scottish and British champions, we were fortunate to have such a good band come to our community. The only bad thing was over far too soon, as time just seemed to fly by.
FETE: the flags are out, the signs are up! Saturday 23rd June, starting at 1pm, as usual in the grounds of the Primary School in Semple View. There is a glut of fliers going around telling you what you can look forward o on, telling you what is happening on the day. If you have not seen one, they are in both shops and the Post Office.
SECURITY: at this time of year take extra care to keep your garage and garden sheds locked, they are a favourite target for thieves. There is nothing more annoying than getting ready to cut the lawn, or do some strimming, and find the machinery has been half inched!
ROADS: now that we have flashing "SLOW DOWN 30 MPH" signs in Beith Road, we need to press for other ways of combatting speeding traffic, I was horrified to see the speed of "boy racers" tearing through the village, when I was putting the bunting up in the "Triangle" on Sunday evening. It is increasingly dangerous, because of the amount of parked traffic, which makes it difficult to see oncoming traffic, either as a pedestrian, or a motorist around the Station Road/Main Street junction. The roadworks on Midton Road caught everyone by surprise, including the Roads department, who were expecting them during the school holidays. However, it will be good to have Midton Road resurfaced, and the disruption should not last long. Unfortunately that road seems to be a favourite for 'boy racers" too, so any traffic calming needs to be extended to Midton Road and Station Road.
RHOMBUS GARDEN: the Japanese knotweed opposite the Howwood Inn, has been sprayed with chemicals to kill it, and will be done several more times. the orange fencing is there to warn people not to go in that area, in case it has just been sprayed, so please give it a wide berth for the rest of the summer, and advise any children to do likewise, until it is sorted, thank you.

15/06/2007
CONCERT: last chance for tickets to hear the Glasgow Wind band playing on Friday 15th June in Howwood Parish Church. Concert starts at 7.30pm, tickets are on sale at the Post Office, or you can order them from Christine & Robert Scarsbrook (Tel: 01505 704083). The band are Scottish Gold medalists 2006, and British gold Medalists 2007, so at £5.50 (£4.50 concession) it is an opportunity not to be missed. There may be tickets at the door, but get them beforehand to avoid disappointment.
QUIZ NIGHT: at Midton Bowling club on Tuesday 19th June. I made an error, sorry, entrance fee is £1 per person, all money collected on the night, gets redistributed. This is always an excellent night, starts around 7.30pm; quiz masters, as in previous years George Mackay and Michael Quinn.
FETE: is Saturday 23rd June, starting at 1pm, as usual in the grounds of the Primary School in Semple View. You should have had a flier, telling you what is happening on the day. If you have not seen one, they are in both shops and the Post Office.
ROADS: there is much rejoicing! We have flashing "SLOW DOWN 30 MPH" signs, both directions Beith Road. I have seen cars slow down when they are flashed at, so think they will make a big difference. Also the Traffic Police have been in action in the village booking speeders, and that also is very welcome. The bus stop at the Post Office in Main Street, is to get a seat in it. Several people have requested one (it is certainly the most used stop), and the Council has responded by finding the funds. Hope it is to your liking. The parking bay in front of the new shop is due to get a half hour waiting restriction put on it, which should help to keep the space for those using the shop. Traffic calming measures and a proper pedestrain crosing are possibilities for the 2008-9 financial year, so I am told. That too is good news, better if it came sooner, but anything that makes our village safer is good for us all. Trust you all read and digested the Road Safety Leaflet? Extra copies available in the shops, Post Office, and the Hall.
COUNCILLOR SURGERIES: we have 4 Councillors for the Johnstone South, Elderslie and Howwood Ward. Three Labour, one SNP: so you can go to whoever you like, if you have issues. They are all anxious to prove that our village matters to them, even though or perhaps because we our outweighed 9 to 1 by the other settlements, bit like Scotland in relation to England one could say. The Labour ones (Iain McMillan, John Caldwell and John Hood) will hold a surgery in Howwood Village Hall on Friday 22nd June 5.30pm -7pm, then on the fourth Friday of the each month at the same time. I will pass on Tracie McGee's (SNP) surgery dates, when I have them. They all have e-mail addresses, go to the Council 's website: www.renfrewshire.gov.uk, or phone up member services on 0141 840 3490 or 0141 840 3495.

HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH: Christian Aid week raised over £1,400 from contributions people made in Howwood.
FETE: June is always busy with outdoor events in almost every corner of Scotland, and we are no exception. Lilias Day was on the 2nd, Lochwinnoch Gala on the 9th, Kilbarchan Agricultural Show on the 16th, and Howwood Village Fete Saturday 23rd of June. Tickets for the wind band concert (Friday 15th June) are on sale at the Post Office, or you can order them from Christine & Robert Scarsbrook (Tel: 01505 704083). Douglas is back from holiday, so if anyone still wants a stall at the Fete, contact him (work number 0141581 2213). Don't forget the Quiz Night at Midton Bowling club on Tuesday 19th June. Teams of 4, entry £5 per team. This is always an excellent night, starts around 7.30pm; quiz masters, as in previous years George Mackay and Michael Quinn.
COMMUNITY COUNCIL: next meeting is Tuesday 12th June, 7.30pm Howwood Village Hall. Top of the agenda will be to make sure all arrangements are in place for Fete Day. If you can help on the day, please let a member of the CC know. The more help there is, the easier it is for the Fete to keep happening. At the last meeting there was a huge list of matters concerning roads. We are grateful for the attendance of Scott Allan from that department at 3 or 4 meetings per annum, and increasingly hopeful that traffic calming measures will be introduced along Main Street. Perhaps the support from our newly elected Councillors will make a difference? We expect speed activated signs (as have appeared in other ares) to be erected this month. The new bus stop appeared as requested at the foot of the steps pronto, then was moved along to where the buses have historically stopped, when travelling west. However we have been waiting, asking, pleading, hoping /praying for traffic calming for as long as I have been CC secretary (5 years), and still no sign! Strange how some things happen in days, others take years.
PARK CONSULTATION: 18 souls attended, including our two Community Bobbies and Councillor resident in the village. Pauline Gallacher "facilitated", she has considerable experience in this type of thing, and success in her own community of Neilston, where great things have been achieved with better facilities. Everyone was agreed the park needs decent paths, more seats, decent play equipment for older kids. Exactly how much can be achieved will depend on how flexible Renfrewshire Council is on the use of the space. They own it after all, and would probably be maintaining it once the work was done. In particular, if (and it is a big if) we got the funds, would they forgo a full size football pitch in place of an all weather 5 a side area, or one of these "Multi Use Games Areas", similar to the ones in Elm Drivel or Craigenfeoch road Johnstone? Maybe we could fit in both? How often are the changing rooms used, could that flat area be used for something far better? The next step will be to write to the Council, to see what they think about these questions. I also need to write up the group discussions; then find someone to draw up a proper plan, based on these ideas, and seek further comment. After that, we could be in a position to apply for grants. Thanks to all who took time to attend, and to the Howwood Inn for letting us meet there.
Meanwhile HOWWOOD WILDLIFE and WOODLANDSs have been awarded a grant from the "Breathing Spaces" Big Lottery programme, so if the Japanese knotweed can be eradicated, then plans can progress to make that area a woodland garden, where people can take time to sit and watch the world go by. If you see orange plastic fencing, keep out of the area: it is being sprayed with chemicals to kill the dreaded JK, and its tough stuff, so will need several doses this summer, and next spring.
30/05/2007
HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH: a barbeque is planned for Sunday 3rd June, after the church service.
ROADS: Bridesmill road reopened last week, and now has a splendid new surface from Howwood as far as Markethill. Tandlehill Road (Gardener's Antiques to lower Kilbarchan) is due to be closed now that Bridesmill Road has been done, for anyone who takes that route. Increased road traffic is expected on these roads, when AMEY starts work on the Roadhead roundabout, which is due to take place, some time over the summer. Part of Midton Road is due for resurfacing, and Scottish Gas will be replacing a section of gas main on Midton Road, between Main Street and Bowfield road, but the work is scheduled for the school holidays (starting Monday 9th July).
FETE: June is always busy with outdoor events in almost every corner of Scotland, and we are no exception. Lilias Day is on the 2nd, Lochwinnoch Gala on the 9th, Kilbarchan Agricultural Show on the 16th, and Howwood Village Fete Saturday 23rd of June. Tickets for the wind band concert (Friday 15th June) are on sale at the Post Office, or you can order them from Christine & Robert Scarsbrook (Tel: 01505 704083). GUIDES: I have been asked to include the following statement from the Guider. "It is with great regret that I have to announce the closure of 1st Howwood guide Unit. After the unit closes for the summer, it will not re-open. This is due to a lack of girls in the village wanting to join their local Guide unit. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the village who has supported the guide unit over the past 43 years. I would especially like to express my own personal thanks to the last remaining 5 guides who have been a credit to themselves and their families. Their loyalty and support have been an inspiration."
Semple Ranger Unit will still continue as usual on a Wednesday evening Howwood Parish Church at 7pm. Young women aged 14 - 25 years are invited to come along and see what the Ranger unit is about. If you wish to join the unit, you will be made most welcome. I can assure you that you will find it most rewarding and enjoyable. You will certainly never get bored! Anyone interested in the Semple Rangers can either phone Gayle (07900610198) or Alexis (07833610462).

HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH: the minister, David Stewart was in Malawi recently. If you would like to hear about his trip and try some Malawian food, come to the church on Thursday 24th May at 7.30pm. Also a barbeque is planned for Sunday 3rd June, after the church service.
ROADS: Bridesmill road reopened at the weekend, and now has a splendid new surface from Howwood as far as Markethill. Tandlehill Road (Gardener's Antiques to lower Kilbarchan) was due to be closed last week. Increased road traffic is expected on these roads, when AMEY starts work on the Roadhead roundabout, which is due to take place, some time over the summer.
PUBLIC MEETING: took place last Tuesday, around 50 people attended. There were two presentations: one from the ASIST(Anti social investigation team), who made it clear that you do not need to put any complaint in writing, you can phone and give details, they will come out and see you at home, but must report incidents to them (they are available during "office hours" on 01505 325030). If you do not report incidents to them or the Police (01505 40400) then they cannot act. If you would like to know about the services offered to those on the receiving end of anti-social behaviour, I have information packs, and there are some in the Village Hall. The heads of Housing and Social work (child care and criminal justice) in the Council, came to the same meeting to speak about the Homeless unit in the village: there was widespread concern following recent press reports about a temporary resident in the unit. The end result has been that that person was moved on rapidly and the house is no longer a homeless unit, and will be returned to the Council's stock of properties for rent. That is good news, but some people were understandably still annoyed because they felt the situation should never have arisen, and wanted re-assurance that it would not happen again. This the officials were not able to give, but personally I feel I now know far more about the duties placed on the Council to rehouse all sorts of people, and what a difficult task that is, and what dedication is required from those entrusted with this task. I think they and our newly elected councillors are now aware of the strength of feeling in our community, and that communication will be much better in the future. Remember society includes a small number of dangerous people, whether or not they have been caught, so it is wise to be vigilant and report anything suspicious. In a village like ours' strangers acting strangely should be obvious.

PUBLIC CONSULTATION: the Community Council hopes to apply for money to improve the park, and Howwood Wildlife and Woodlands plan to make a community garden in the area opposite the Howwood Inn. We would like to hear what you want to see in the park and garden, so are running an evening when you can come and tell us. We will meet in the Howwood Inn on Wednesday 30th May at 7.30 pm. The plan is to walk round the park with a few questions in mind; then retire to the hotel, where your thoughts will be compiled with the help of Pauline Gallacher (she facilitated the consultation days for the Village Design Plan in 2004). Sandwiches and tea/coffee will be served, please let me know if you intend to be there, so I can tell the hotel how many people to expect.

HOWWOOD PRIMARY SCHOOL: will be represented at the Cancer Research UK Race for life by a primary 5 pupil who will be doing the race in Bellahouston park on Sunday 10th June along with her Mum and Gran. Cancer is something that has touched a lot of people in the past and this very worthwhile event raises awareness and money for the research that has seen so much development in the field of cancer research.
They would really appreciate your support, if you would like to make a donation you can do this either at the Village Post Office or for those of you who have access, you can make online donations at: http://www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/howwoodprimary . All contributions, no matter how small will be greatly appreciated.
HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH: the annual plant sale will be on Friday 18th May at 7pm. Entry price is £1.50, for which you get tea and drop scones. If you are looking for bedding plants be there early, as they tend to go fast. The church is planning to run a holiday club in August, so if you are interested in helping contact the minister, David Stewart.
HOWWOOD WILDLIFE and WOODLANDS: will be holding another walk on Sunday 20th May, meet 2pm in the "Triangle". The walk will be in the Linister glen, aiming to identify as many bird songs, trees and wild flowers as possible. All welcome, please see that you have adequate footwear for the terrain. Also the half barrels are now in place at all entrances to the village, and will be planted up next week, to provide a floral welcome to Howwood.

HOMELESS UNIT/SPECIAL MEETING TUESDAY 15TH MAY : you may have seen the petition circulating calling for the immediate relocation of the Homeless unit away from Hallside street. This follows a most disturbing discovery that a convicted rapist and murderer had been moved into the property. Had it not been for the vigilance of local residents who wondered why there were press photographers outside the property, none of this would have come to light. The person was moved out later that evening, and the property lies empty; the petition makes it clear that this is not a campaign against the principle of a homeless unit. There are concerns over the length of time that it has been in the middle of the village. There are concerns too over anti-social behaviour and risk. Many needy families have been housed there, some still live in the village, and have been an asset to the community. However sending someone such as the afore mentioned is not acceptable, and we need to know how that was able to happen, and what the plans are for the house in the future. Ann Carruthers, Housing Advice & Homeless Services Manager and Jim Chalmers from the Anti Social Investigations Team, will attend the meeting on May 15th at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall, to which all members of the public are invited. Speakers will not be able to discuss individual cases at the meeting, but they will tell us how their services operate, and questions from the public will be allowed through the chairman of the meeting.

The plan is to walk round the park with a few questions in mind; then retire to the hotel, where your thoughts will be compiled with the help of Pauline Gallacher (she facilitated the consultation days for the Village Design Plan in 2004). Sandwiches and tea/coffee will be served, and if you would like something stronger, there is the bar! I will be sending out invites to all organisations in the village. If you do not get an invite no offence is intended, so please don't be miffed, but just let me know that you intend to be there, so I can tell the hotel how many people to expect.
ELECTIONS: our Constituency (West Renfrewshire) MSP Trish Godman (Labour) was re-elected. The list MSPs for our area (West of Scotland) are Annabel Goldie, Jackson Carlaw (both Conservative), Ross Finnie (Liberal), and Stewart Maxwell, Gil Paterson, Bill Wilson and Stuart MacMillan (all SNP). On Renfrewshire Council we have 4 Councillors for the Johnstone South Elderslie and Howwood ward. They are John Caldwell, John Hood and Iain MacMillan (all Labour), and Tracie McGee (SNP) who lives in Howwood. If you remember, our opposition to being swallowed up by this super ward was ignored by the powers that be. I hope attention is not just focused on the bigger settlements in the ward, time will tell.

PARK: it was a very pleasant surprise to see that Environmental Services of Renfrewshire Council have managed to repair the steps up to the park from Beith Road, and it looks as though the workmen have done a good job. All we need now is to improve the paths and other facilities. If you have any bright ideas of how the park in Howwood could be improved please let me know. You can always send an e-mail to the website (www.Howwood.com), or use the suggestion box in the Post Office.
POST OFFICE: key charging facility is now available at Howwood Post Office, several people had asked about it earlier in the year. Now its here, no need to go into Johnstone to access one.
HOWWOOD PLAYGROUP: is looking for new kids to come along after the summer holidays. So if you are a parent with a child who will be aged between two and a half and five in August, why not go along to the Village Hall on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between 9.45 and 11.30 in the morning, and make yourself known to Kate or Fiona. Alternatively you can get more details from Karen on 01505 705643.
HOWWOOD CHURCH: there will be a celebration of Holy Communion next week. Also the Fairtrade sales table stops at the end of the month, but will return later in the year.
HOWWOOD COMMUNITY COUNCIL: next meeting is Tuesday 8th May, when Scott Allan will attend to give us an update on all matters relating to Roads. Any matter to go on the agenda, please let me know before the meeting. We were hoping to introduce a "fun run" around the Fete, but unfortunately we have not been able to find a suitably safe route, so there will not be one this time. If you are wanting a stall at the Fete though Douglas Paxton is the man to contact on 0141 581 2213 or e-mail: djpaxton@reidkerr.ac.uk
SAT NAV: it appears satelite navigation systems in cars are the favourite items to be stolen. If you have one take it out of the car completely when you park your car. Hiding it in the glove compartment is no good, apparently an experienced tea leaf can tell its there by the marks on the windscreen, or so I am reliably told. Maybe map reading will come back into fashion

FANTASTIC WEATHER: these past days have been wonderful , more like summer than spring. Anyone who has taken the opportunity to be outside should have heard the songs of the first summer visitors from Africa: both Chiff-chaffs and Willow Warblers were singing away to announce their arrival. They come to northern Europe to breed when there is a plentiful supply of insects, which we have in abundance as soon as the weather turns warm!
HOWWOOD WILDLIFE AND WOODLANDS: had a walk across Whittliemuir on Saturday (blue route on the walks leaflet), in perfect weather. 10 people and 4 dogs went, and all returned sun burnt but safe. We took the opportunity to put several "Scotways" signs up on fenceposts, to make the route more obvious across the muir. The discs are green with "Scotways" written on them, and a direction arrow. The arrows all presume the route was being walked from North Castlewalls road to Hartfield (south to north), then along the public road, past the Trout loch to Bowfield road. Hopefully these will help people doing this walk, as the way past the former reservoir is not immediately obvious, and we did hear reports of people getting lost, having to phone for help.
HOWWOOD CHURCH: along with other churches in the area is holding a "prayer vigil" between 12 noon and 8pm in Paisley Abbey, on Wednesday 18th April. That is the national day for Zimbabwe, and the day of prayer is a symbol of solidarity with the people of that country, who have suffered long and hard.
HOWWOOD COMMUNITY COUNCIL: will be putting out another newsletter early in May, in conjunction with a road safety leaflet. If you are involved in a group/club in the village, and have activities planned, please let me know by Friday 20th April if you would like events advertised in the newsletter. The newsletter will have the dates for the Fete (23rd June), the Wind band concert (15th June)and the Fete week quiz at the Bowling Club(19th June). We still hope to have a "fun-run", but that is not certain at this stage.

NAME THE PATH COMPETITION: the network of paths around Castle Semple Loch is progressing. The latest plan is for a path from near St Bryde's Bridge on the Sustrans Cycle way, to the Fancy Bridge round the base of "Deerhill". From there, the plan is for a bridge across the Black Cart, and a path round the south side of the loch to the RSPB reserve. The section from the RSPB/Lochwinnoch Station to Lochwinnoch has been completed and the one from Lochlip road to the Castle Semple Visitor, and then on to Blackditch Bay and the Cycleway are under construction. Any way if you have a bright idea for a name for the path, get a form from Linda in the Post Office and put pen to paper. The prize is a family activity day at Castle Semple Visitor Centre. Anyone can enter, whatever age.
HOWWOOD WILDLIFE AND WOODLANDS: are planning another guided walk on Saturday 14th April. Meet at 12 noon in the "Triangle": wear suitable protective clothing and footwear, the route will depend on the weather and numbers, but is likely to be the long (blue) walk across Hartfield Moss, if the weather is good. It will also provide an opportunity to see where any new way markers could be placed, at points where the route is not necessarily obvious. The group now has the lease on the piece of land between the steps and the park, opposite the Howwood Inn (the area of tress and the dreaded Japanese Knotweed). Once the knotweed has been treated we want to make it into a Community Garden;
plans will be drawn up, and if grant applications are successful work will be done over the next two years.
RECYCLING: good weather meant much gardening, and the first crop of grass clippings, so I phoned to find out when the Brown bins collection would start. They sent out a leaflet with the dates, which arrived the day after they started! Did anyone get a leaflet at the right time? Anyway, for most of the village the next uplift will be Thursday 19th April, then fortnightly: Mayfield and Torbracken it will be Friday 13th April, then fortnightly thereafter.

SPRING CLEAN: the annual litter picking/clean up of the village is upon us. Meet at 2pm in front of the Village Hall on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th March: black bags, gloves, tabbards, and litter pickers will be provided. So come and lend a hand, even for half an hour. Children are welcome, preferably with a well behaved adult in tow, and will be kept clear of roads. The Primary School is having a special school assembly on Tuesday 27th March when the "Litter muncher" will be taking charge: the children have designed some wonderful posters on this subject, you can see them in both shops, the Post Office, and on the noticeboard outside the hall. My personal favourite had the caption "Don't be a litter bug, or you'll get a smack in the gub!" Somewhat militant, but expresses how you feel about people who litter our lovely countryside with bottles, cans, fast food wrappers, builders' rubble and all kind of other stuff. And there must be a lot of people who do, judging by the amount of stuff there is. In contrast, a good example has been set by one resident who lives just outside the village, who cannot make the "Spring Clean" dates, so went out and cleared a huge amount of stuff between the village and Elliston Bridge when he could. That area is particularly bad, from passing motorists flinging stuff out of cars, and his efforts have been a great help. Thank you. If you want to do the same please let me know. We will have a skip in the Village Hall car park at the weekend, bags will be picked up and taken back there, by those who have volunteered the use of their vans. We live in a pleasant village, in attractive countryside: have some pride and keep it that way.

HOWWOOD SPORTS & HOBBIES GROUP: "please note that due to our ever increasing popularity we are unable to take on any new members for the Junior Group. We do not foresee that this situation will change in the new future, but will keep you posted if any new places become available."
