CHRISTMAS SING SONG:
Karen and John of the Howwood Inn invite you to a Christmas sing - along on Saturday 20 December from 5pm onwards.  Families most welcome but please note that children must vacate the premises by 5pm in accordance with licensing regulations.  All welcome to enjoy mulled wine / soft drink and traditional mince pies.

HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH:   Sunday 21st December, Children's  Carol and Nativity Service is at 11 am, and there is a modern celebration of Christmas with music and readings at 6.30pm.  On Christmas Eve:  Wednesday 24th December there will be a service of carols and readings at 7pm, followed by tea and mince pies.  The service on Christmas Day is a family service, so bring the weans, and starts at 10.30am.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A GUID NE'ER, when it comes.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS:
were successfully turned on by Abigail Macfarlane last Friday.  We were lucky with the weather when one considers what it had been like, and it would have been nice to sing carols outside, however I hope everyone enjoyed carols in the Church Hall.  Thanks to the Church for their hospitality, and to Renfrewshire Council for making the necessary arrangements for the switching on service.

HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH:  the Guild meets on Monday 15th for their Christmas Party in the Church Hall at 7.45pm.  The service on Sunday 14th December will be the "Gift Service", when children and adults are asked to bring gifts that will go to the Preshal Trust, who help, families whose lives have been blighted by drug or alcohol abuse.  The concert last month given by the Paisley Philarmonic Choir raised around £2,000, which will go towards providing clean water in Malawi.  A splendid effort by all concerned.

HOWWOOD WRI:  meets on Tuesday 18th December for a Christmas get together, with a taste and try session.  7.30pm in the Village Hall.

01/12/2008
HOWWOOD PRIMARY SCHOOL:
is holding a dress rehearsal of its Christmas Concert at 10am on Friday 5th December, any senior citizens who would like to come along to watch, will be made most welcome.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS:  the date to have them switched on, along with carol singing IS to be Friday 5th December.  Unfortunately Johnstone Silver Band has a prior booking, but it is going to be easier to stick with the original date.  Please meet just before 7pm for the switch on in the "Triangle".  If it is dry we may sing some carols outside, if not then we will all adjourn to the warmth of the Church Hall for the carol singing, mince pies and tea.  People of all faiths or no particular faith, will be made most welcome, and we are hoping for as good a turnout as last year, especially from youngsters.

CLIMATE MARCH SCOTLAND:  takes place in Glasgow on Saturday 6th December.  Assemble at 12.30pm in the Amphitheatre in Clyde Street.  There will be speakers, workshops, music, stalls and a short film.  The event is t call for just solutions  to Climate change:  something that may well affect us all.

24/11/2008
ST ANDREW'S DAY:  is Sunday 30th November.  The route by which Andrew became our patron saint is somewhat tenuous, and Scotland "shares" him with Greece and Russia and probably other countries too.  He is not recorded as saying much but he was the first disciple, and it was he who introduced his brother Simon Peter to Jesus, the one on whom the Church was supposed to be founded.  Whatever one makes of religion, actions are more important than words, we can all celebrate that.  The "Saltire" as our national flag is called, is in memory of St Andrew:  a simple but beautiful white diagonal cross on a blue background, just like the white jet streams one sees across a blue summer sky.

HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH GUILD:  meets on Monday 1st December for the annual carol service in the Laigh Kirk.  I guess people are meeting at the Laigh Kirk, rather than Howwood Church, but to be sure contact one of the committee:  Pat Burns's number is 01505 843245.

HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH GUILD:  meets on Monday 24th November in the Church Hall at 7.45pm, when Liz Parsons will give a talk on "The Birds in our Garden".  All welcome.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS:  the date to have them switched on, along with carol singing was to be Friday 5th December.  Unfortunately Johnstone Silver Band have a prior booking, so we are looking at an alternative date.  Please watch this space, for the rescheduled date.  Hopefully tea and mince pies will be available in the Church Hall, as long as the new date suits the church as well.

BULB PLANTING:  took place at the previous weekend, thanks to all who helped.   It is nice to get moral support from national politicians, but quite inappropriate of them to use the event to promote themselves.  That is disappointing, as it creates an illusion of active participation, when the creation of the garden is down to the hard work of a few people in this village, no-one else.

HOSPITAL VISITING:  transport is available in the evening for anyone living in Renfrewshire.   To use the service you need to register by phoning 0845 128 4027 in the afternoon, transport can be booked up to one week in advance, and will need to provide some information to ensure those who really need the service are given priority.   Priority will be given to those travelling to their nearest hospital;  to those who are over 60, to disabled, and to those on benefit.  All information provided will be treated in strictest confidence.

SEARCHING FOR RELATIVES:
a lady from New Zealand is tracing her family.  Her great grandfather James Allan was born in Howwood in 1873, he lived with his mother and stepfather George and Margaret Wilson, who had four other children:  Elizabeth, George, John and Thomas.  If you can help her trace these relatives and their descendents go to the forum on the village website, or if you do not have access to the internet contact me and I will e-mail her with any info.  Thanks.

HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH:  is holding its Christmas Fayre on Saturday 15th November between 10 am and 2 pm in the Church Hall.  There will no doubt be lots to buy, and refreshments served.  Sorry again to the Guild, my notice for the meeting last Monday was overlooked.

HOWWOOD WRI:   meets Tuesday 18th November in the Village Hall at 7.30pm for a Whist Drive.  The Paisley Philharmonic Choir gave an absolutely splendid concert on Sunday 2nd November in the Church.  What pleasure to hear music of such a high standard in our own village, with instrumental soloists from Jordanhill school, and to know the money raised is going to help provide clean water for a village in Malawi.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY:  was well attended as usual;  thanks to the Brownies, Rangers, Alexis, Russell and the Reverend David Stewart.

BULB PLANTING:  took place at the weekend, thanks to all who helped.  If you read the leaflet from the Labour party recently you might have noticed that Douglas Alexander MP "helped" at the opening of the Rhombus garden.  He did no such thing.  The "help" to create this garden has come from a small band of volunteers in our village who have raised funds, written letters, made plans, planted and contributed stuff.  No-one else.  It is nice to get moral support, even from people who were not actually asked to the opening but appeared.  However it is the height of cheek for them to take any credit for what was a community project, with no input from them whatsoever, and a poor reflection on their party to use the event for their own advancement.

MOTHER & TODDLERS:
has resumed.  For anyone with children, between the ages of 0 and 5 years old .  The group meets Monday to Friday between 10am and 12 noon in the Village Hall.  There are more kids than ever going, but plenty room for more.  All welcome.

The Parish Church Guild meets on Monday 10th November at 7.45 pm in the Church Hall:  the subject will be "Water Aid".

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY:  is Sunday 9th November.   The normal service will be held at the war memorial in Bowfield Road at 12.30pm to which people of all faiths, or no faith at all, are invited to remember those brave men and women who have paid the ultimate price in service of their country, and our defence.

BULB PLANTING:  was cancelled last weekend, because of the weather.  Instead we shall bulb plant in the Rhombus Garden on the weekend Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th November.  Meet opposite the Howwood Inn at 2pm, both days, and pray or dry weather!

RHOMBUS GARDEN:  the garden was officially opened last Saturday, in the most dreadful weather.  Driving rain, and gale force winds.  No need to water the Copper Beech tree in, donated by the church and planted by the minister.  Over 30 people attended, which was most impressive, and we had a very sociable time in the Howwood Inn afterwards, and thanks to them for their hospitality.  A special thanks to David and Robert who piped all through the rain, across the road while the planting and very quick speechifying went on.  Support like that from the community makes it all worth while, thanks everybody.

HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH:   Final chance to get tickets for the concert on Sunday 2nd November given by the Paisley Philharmonic Choir.  Tickets on sale at the Post Office; the concert is to raise money for lean water in Malawi.  Sorry I forgot to announce the last meeting of the Parish Church Guild which was on Monday 27th October.  Guild meets fortnightly, with a break around Christmas.

FLY TIPPING:  yet again, in the field entrance before Garthland Bridge.  If you had anyone one in recently to "landscape" your garden, check out what is piled up their, and it you recognise it, please report the offenders to the hotline:  0845 230 4090.  Thanks

HOWWOOD COMMUNITY COUNCIL & HOWWOOD WILDLIFE and WOODLANDS:
held their joint AGM on Friday, thanks to Margaret, Liz and Margo from Oxfam, who gave a most interesting talk.  If you are looking for am ethical and different Christmas present to send try this website  www.Oxfam.org.uk/Unwrapped you will not be dissappointed.

RHOMBUS GARDEN:  the garden will officially be opened on Saturday 25th October around 11 am.  By which time we will have had another tidy up, and 4 benches put in the "amphitheatre" at the back of the garden, to provide another place for people to sit and enjoy the good weather (when it comes back!)  The minister will be planting a tree to celebrate 150 years of worship in the village, and the Brownies will be participating on that morning.  In the afternoon we will be planting woodland bulbs:  so please join us for bulb planting on Saturday 25th October from 2pm, and the same time on Sunday 26th.

HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH:  is running a Fairtrade Christmas stall on Friday 24th October from 7pm -9pm in the Church Hall.   There will be a wide range of products on sale, and the chance to hear about and help the people who make them.  Entry is £1, but that includes your cuppa and piece.  Come along and see what is on show, and know that money spent on gifts there, will be going to the producers.  Final chance to get tickets for the concert on Sunday 2nd November given by the Paisley Philharmonic Choir.  Tickets on sale at the Post Office.

SCRAPBOOKING CLUB:  I think is starting in the Village Hall Monday 20th October, probably 7.30pm.  I am sorry I do not have more details, I had to write my article early this week.  It sounds an interesting idea:  advice will be given at the club on how to make the best of old photographs and memorabilia, so they get organised with as much information as you have before its all forgotten.

HOWWOOD PRIMARY SCHOOL:
have requested that I draw to public attention that some individual is letting their dog pooh all over the playground and in the Margaret Fraser Memorial garden, which must require the owner to actually open the gate, let the dog in, and leave it to do its business!  It seems incredible anyone could be so irresponsible, but they clearly are, and it would be a waste of time reasoning with them:  if you see them please report them to the dog warden, so they can be fined  0141 840 3164.  Thank you.
HOWWOOD COMMUNITY COUNCIL & HOWWOOD WILDLIFE and WOODLANDS AGM: is on Friday 17th October at 7pm, the guest speaker will be from Oxfam, who will speak about "Fairtrade".  Do come along to hear what new, and enjoy a cup of tea at the interval.

HOWWOOD SPORTS & HOBBIES GROUP
:   would like to thank the Parents and the children for their continued support of the Junior Club. They are full and a waiting list is in operation. If you want your child's name added please call down to youth group any Thursday.  Children must be 8yrs or older before they can be added. Places will be given once a free place becomes available.  The numbers for the Senior Club have reduced of late. This is mainly due to the Council decision to impose conditions relating to football in the hall.  They need the support of the teenagers to continue and are offering local teenagers the opportunity to come in and speak to them over the next two Thursdays to see what you would like to see at your youth club.  Let them know your views.  They can discuss possible options with you.  If the numbers do not increase then the Senior club will have to close. This is not something that they want to do but it cannot continue with the present member numbers. This is your chance to let those running the club know exactly what you want, so take it up!!

SEX & THE CITY CHARITY NIGHT:  Linda Aitken would like to thank Karen Lafferty from the Howwood Inn for her hospitality at the sex & the city night.  The cocktails were fantastic and the canapies were wonderful - thanks again Karen!   Thanks also to the Ladies who came and supported the event on the night. The evening was great fun and Linda would also like to thank everyone who gave a donation even though they could not make the event.  In total £230 was raised for the Kieran Ness Foundation.

HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH 150th ANNIVERSARY:  in October 1858 the first services were held in Howwood Church, which at that stage was still part of Lochwinnoch Parish.  To mark this occasion there will be a series of events  Sunday 5th October the Very Reverend Dr Sandy McDonald will preach at the morning service, and dedicate a banner celebrating 150 years.  Two former ministers have been invited to lead worship :  REv Phyllis Wilson on 19th October, and Rev Benjamin Abeledo on 23rd November.  Hopefully parishioners will make a special effort to attend. A  CONCERT:  will be held in the church on Sunday 2nd November given by the Paisley Philharmonic Choir.  Tickets should be on sale at the Post Office, so book now to avoid disappointment.

NEIGHBOUR MEDIATION SERVICE:  a presentation of this service was given at last Tuesday's CC meeting.  It offers help, to sort out disputes between neighbours.  The service is free, voluntary and confidential;  so neither the Police nor to the anti social behaviour team are involved.  Nothing can be accomplished if people are not prepared to talk to each other, but if both parties are willing, then differences can be sorted out.  Could this be of assistance to you, or anyone you know who has neighbour problems?  Then phone Renfrewshire Mediation Service on 01505 331472 during 'office hours'.  If you think things are beyond mediation there is always the Anti Social Behaviour line which is :  08700 169 1283, but its always better to look for a solution first, and you don't know if talking will work unless you try.

NEWSLETTERS:  should have been distributed to every house in the village.  If you have not received one please try the Post Office, or either of the shops for a copy, or indeed the website: www.howwood.com

CHEMIST:  I have heard that the pharmacist has been turned down again, but is still keen to open in Howwood;   strange how something straightforward can become a tangled web, who knows what the final outcome will be?  So watch this space, and if it seems that writing letters of support will help, I will give pass on the relevant address.

SPONSORED CYCLE RUN:
‘Team Elliston’ – Rosee & Ken Macdonald & Danny & Lillian McAlister, would like to thank everyone who sponsored the Cycle Glasgow 2008 cycle ride to raise money for the new Paul O’Gorman Leukaemia Research Centre at Gartnavel Hospital. Between us we raised a whopping £434.50 . Many thanks again to everyone for their generosity.

WALK:  Saturday was unusual, the sun shone and it was windy but nice to be outside!  Seven of us tried the new path from Fancy Bridge to the Cycleway;  you get there by way of walking to Garthland Bridge, then along the Scottish Water access road past Elliston Weir.  It is not the easiest of paths to find, as it is stuff called "Grass-crete" which lets the grass grow through it, but once you have found it, the way is clear.  If in doubt aim for the ruined former laundry buildings by St Bryde's burn, and you will pick it up.  There is a nice new gate onto the cycleway, and it is just about do-able by bicycle.

GRANTS for HOWWOOD:  at the last meeting of the Johnstone and Villages Area Committee, the Community Council  request for money which will pay for a detailed feasibility study and design for a pavement from the Station to Garthland Bridge  and a safe crossing of that bridge for pedestrians and cyclists, was passed.  The Sports & Hobbies were also successful with their grant application, so good news alround, and our combined thanks to the members of that committee (the elected Renfrewshire Councillors for wards 7 and 8) for passing these applications.  The Sports & Hobbies provide an important and popular facility for youngsters, and a safe connection to paths beyond Garthland Bridge has been repeatedly asked for by people, and once it is there will bring benifits to residents of and visitors to Howwood.

SPEEDWATCH CAMPAIGN:  has been going for some weeks.  The primary aim is to get drivers to slow down:  there is a good reason for the speed limit being 30mph, if a pedestrian is knocked down by a car doing 30mph there is a good chance they will survive.  If the car is going at 40, the pedestrian will more than likely die.  Most people appreciate that, especially those with young children, unfortunately there is a residual who take offence when recorded over the speed limit.  These are precisley the ones who need to take responsibility for their own selfishness and dangerous driving.

HOWWOOD WOMEN'S RURAL INSTITUTE:  starts their winter programme on Tuesday 16th September at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, with a talk from Christine MacLeod of Kilbarchan National Trust for Scotland Weaver's Cottage

BEST GARDEN GARDEN COMPETITION:
was judged last Friday by Gordon Nicholl from Lochwinnoch and Cllr John Hood. There was a tie! First equal, but I have not had time to notify the winners and get their permission to put their name in print. The result will appear next week. I had an enjoyable evening taking the judges round, and thank you to everyone who entered, it was a pleasure to see your gardens, and many thanks to Gordon and John for giving up their time to be judges.

Sounds like fun as well as for a good cause. For more details contact Linda Aitken on 01505 706603.

LAND ARMY MEDALS:
the work of the young women who worked on the land during WW2 has at long last been recognised; Britain was cut off for much of 1939-45, and had to feed itself, the work of the "landgirls" was vital. Jessie Peacock (nee Surgenor) received her medal a few days ago. Jessie who has lived in Howwood since she was 9, worked on Holmbyre Farm Dalry during the war: congratulations Jessie, and very well deserved.

J & D SCHOOL of DANCE and DRAMA: classes start back on Tuesday, 19th August from 4pm to 8pm at Howwood Community Halls. Enrolment for classes is on Tuesday, 12th August from 6.00pm to 7.00pm at Howwood Community Halls or contact at www.jddance.co.uk

SPEEDWATCH: interesting results so far. Speeds of 36 or 38 not uncommon on Beith Road/ Main Street, service busses some of the worst offenders. Most cars coming in to the village on Station Road are doing more than 30mph. With schools due back next week, there could not be a better time to run a speedwatch campaign

POST OFFICE ROBBERY: not what you would expect in our wee village, but it goes to show things can happen when and where you least expect them (3.20pm Thursday 31st July). Thankfully the secure door was closed and the parcel hatch down, as a result there was damage to property, but no harm done to myself (as I was on duty), and no customers were in the office. The thieves were armed with a knife. Many have made supportive comments, which has reminded me what a fine place Howwood is: your concern is appreciated, so thanks guys!

MIDTON BOWLING CLUB: last Sunday (27th July) the nominated pairs final was played. Derek Speirs and Eddie Hosie (Skip) were the winners of the gentlemen's competition, with Stewart McLellan and John McLellan (Skip) as runners up. In the Ladies competition Helen Burnfield and Carloline Sutherland (Skip) were the winners, with Mary McLellan and Betty Stewart (Skip) as runners up. Well done all!

SPEEDWATCH: the Community speedwatch got underway last week. Trained volunteers from the community man a speed detector and send the results in to the Police and Renfrewshire Council for them to take action against offenders. We are limited by the number of people coming forward to be volunteers, and when we can man the equipment; but the speed of traffic going through Howwood is shocking, and if we can educate people to slow down, and if the persistent and dangerous drivers are caught, then it might save lives. If you want to help please let me know.

POST OFFICE CLOSURE:
Post Office Counters announced their proposed closures for Renfrewshire. Inverclyde. Lanarkhsire and Ayrshire last week, and Howwood is NOT to be one of them. Many in this village will be relieved (not least myself), we have few enough facilities, and it would have been a real blow to lose one of them. The only one up for closure in our area is Graham Street in Johnstone, which is a busy office, and its demise will put extra strain on another already busy office in Walkingshaw Street.

GOOD WEATHER: far too much needing done in the garden this weather, but nice to see some sunny days. The reason was made apparent to me by Bobby Moore of Station Avenue fame: its because Jacks on holiday. Think about it, Jack being Jack Frost! Well it amused me, and hopefully did the same for you; try it on the next person who comments on good weather, and see how it goes down.

WALKS: Saturday 2nd August walking to Newton of Belltrees; and Saturday 6th September, taking the train to Lochwinnoch, then walking back to Howwood by way of the new SRANI path that goes round the foot of the Deerhill.

RAFFLE PRIZES:
turns out there are 2 prizes unclaimed, with illegible telephone numbers on ticket stub. Would the holder of ticket number 04064 contact Linda in the Post Office and claim your watch: also the holder of ticket number 00944 claim your bottle!

GARDEN COMPETITION: now closed, entrants will be contacted with date for judging. It has been rather wet since all that fine weather in May and early June. Did you notice how many wild flowers there were in the fields? I have never seen so many buttercups, and in some fields there were lots of wild orchids. Nothing like exotic plants of the same name from equatorial forests, a far more demure dainty plant growing in meadows, but lovely to see never the less.

COMMUNITY SPEEDWATCH: please note the training for this will be in the Lesser Hall of the Village Hall, Station Road on Monday 28th July at 7pm.

WALKS: Saturday 2nd August walking to Newton of Belltrees; and Saturday 6th September, taking the train to Lochwinnoch, then walking back to Howwood by way of the new SRANI path that goes round the foot of the Deerhill.

there is one prize unclaimed, with an illegible telephone number on ticket stub. Would the holder of ticket number 04064 contact Linda in the Post Office and claim your watch!

NEW HOUSES: there is a planning application to turn the Teknek factory (former Midton Bleachworks) into 40 residential units and 11 houses. If you have an opinion, there is still time to e-mail or write to the planning department: it is planning application number 08/0513/PP.

GARTHLAND BRIDGE: a large new sign appeared proclaiming "Scour Protection" by the side of this fine old bridge which was built in the 1760s . What this means is that the foundations of the bridge will be protected from erosion caused by the scouring action of water, when the river is in spate. This will not affect traffic or people using the bridge, but each side of the bridge will have its foundations in the river bed strengthened, which will involve keeping the water away from one side, while it is being done, then the other side when it is being repaired. Repairs are also about to be done to parts of the Rowbank dam, so there will be extra construction traffic on Bowfield Road. There will be restricted access to a small area of the banks, but no change in the water level.

WALKS: I gave you the wrong routes, but the right dates last week. Saturday 2nd August walking to Newton of Belltrees; and Saturday 6th September, taking the train to Lochwinnoch, then walking back to Howwood by way of the new SRANI path that goes round the foot of the Deerhill.

NEW HOUSES:
there is a planning application to turn the Teknek factory (former Midton Bleachworks) into 40 residential units and 11 houses. Neighbours on the upper part of Midton Road should have received notification, as the Community Council did last week. The application will have been discussed at Tuesday's CC meeting, and we will be sending in a submission. Individuals can do so as well, up until 12th July .

GARDENING: there is still time to enter the Village Garden Competition. Forms available from myself, or at the Post Office; close of entries is Saturday 19th July, after which all participants will be contacted with the date of judging. The judges will be David Fowles (Lochwinnoch CC chairman), and Cllr John Hood. The welcome tubs are coming in to bloom, the wet weather means we do not have to bother with watering, but a bit of heat would no gang agley! A date has been set for Spring bulb planting in the autumn: the last weekend of October, Sat 25th and Sun 26th. Help would be appreciated, and efforts will be concentrated in the "Rhombus" woodland garden area opposite the Howwood Inn.

WALKS: Howwood Wildlife and Woodlands will be setting out on 2 walks: Saturday 2nd August and Saturday 6th September. In August we plan to do the long "Blue" route, September the new grasscrete path that goes round the base of Deer Hill, to the Sustrans cycleway. All welcome, please come with suitable footwear and clothing, meet 1pm in the "Triangle".

CHEMIST:
the appeal was heard last week, and amazingly the panel ruled in favour of the objector, namely Boots Alliance. So we are not to get a Chemist in the village, apparently because people have not complained about there not being one! Which seems distorted reasoning, not to mention Boots Alliance blantantly thinking of their own vested interest, rather than what would be good for Howwood residents. Hopefully the ruling will be overturned

WE WERE THE CHAMPIONS: I had an enquiry from a follower of Pollok juniors recently, as to where Howwood's football team used to play. Thanks to John Gray I discovered it was a field beyond the Railway Cottages of Station Road, a field now under the by-pass. Meanwhile Gert Cosgrove kindly gave me a newspaper cutting from the Evening Times of 1987, when Howwood Community Council raised funds to buy a trophy that Howwood Amateurs never received 40 years beforehand (1947), when they won the Murdoch Trophy. Fred Storrie is pictured with the 9 surviving members of the 1947 team: Jimmy Cosgrove, Jimmy Nicol, Sam White, Bert Twynholm, Tom Steel, Hugh Smith, Gunner Smith, Jim Docherty and Hugh Cochrane. Rangers and Celtic, eat your hearts out!

FETE:
this year the attractions and burger bar were manned by a company who does this sort of thing all the time. I hope it was to your liking, it certainly was more practical for the Community Council, as there is only so much 10 members can do! Medieval Clydesdale were an unexpected extra, and the Mounted Police did not appear. If you would like to see a football match or competition on Fete day, please stand up and be counted, by which I mean take on the job of organising it, we have not had much luck with that recently. The rain threatened then started, just when the Fete was at its busiest, and although it did not rain heavily, it may have put folk off. We were not as busy as previous years, but still well attended. Thanks to all who participated: put up marquees, tidied up, took a stall, sold raffle tickets, etc. I heard that the Playgroup and Howwood Wildlife and Woodlands were pleased with what they made on the day, hopefully so were others.

COMMUNITY SPEEDWATCH: we now have at least 12 willing volunteers, so I can go ahead and contact Renfrewshire Council to arrange training. Thanks to those who signed up at the Fete. It is certainly worth trying, there are far too many drivers going far too fast through our village.

GARDEN COMPETITION: as with the Speedwatch, we know have enough people interested to run this competition. Its the first time we have tried this, and it is not "seriously" competitive; rather a bit of fun, with the aim is of encouraging people to garden. You can still enter up to Saturday 19th July: forms available from me, or anyone on the Community Council, including Linda at the Post Office. There were no entries at all for the Childrens' garden design competition.

15/06/2008
GLASGOW WIND BAND CONCERT: there were about 120 present for the concert last Friday, and I thought it was the best so far. Music from films such as Superman, Out of Africa, Chicken Run, Mask of Zorro, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom; there were also pieces from "Les Miserables", Gerswhin, the Eighties, and Chicago: finally two well known pieces "Hymn to the Fallen" and the Liberty Bell, which I know as the theme tune for Monty Python! There was a really nice informal feel to the evening and congrats to everyone made it happen.

THE CHEMIST IS COMING?: the appeal will be heard this week, from those objecting to a chemist operating out of the Howwood Village Store. Hopefully Raz will get the go-ahead, I am looking forward to being able to get prescriptions here in Howwood, and am not alone, thats for certain.

FETE: Saturday 21st June: is the day itself; starts Ipm at Howwood Primary School. Inflatable slide, chair-o-planes, cups and saucer roundabouts, football stall, Mounted Police, snack bar, candy floss and licensed bar, lots of stalls, cream teas. Something for everyone I hope. Come and enjoy.

09/06/2008
RHOMBUS GARDEN:
seats, bin and paths all in place, the planters will go up this week: one for herbs, one for "sensory" plants. We are very grateful to the team from Linwood Community Education, who came out and cleared the area of debris twice. Hopefully there will be enough finds left to make a bark path in and out of the trees, and purchase some native trees like birch, gean and willow to plant in the dormant season, once we are sure the knotweed has been "seen off" completely. The plan is for informal seating round the circle at the back of the garden, but that depends on time and money. The garden is there so people can enjoy the great outdoors; please respect what is there and use the seats for sitting on!

SPEED WATCH: the speed of traffic in our village is dangerous, and frequently complained about. We are looking for people to volunteer to take part in the Community Speed Watch campaign. There will be an information stall at the Fete, or any Community Councillor can give you details of how you can take part. GARDEN COMPETITION: forms for this will also be available at the Fete, or from any Community Councillor.

FETE WEEK: starts with the Glasgow Wind band giving a concert in the Church of Scotland on Friday 13th June, at 7.30pm. The following day (Saturday 14th June), there will be a HWW walk: meet at 1pm in the "Triangle", if the weather is fine, we shall do the "Blue" walk, over Whittliemuir. Saturday 21st June: is the date of the FETE itself. There will be a QUIZ NIGHT on Tuesday 17th June, at the Bowling Club 7.30pm, any money taken in goes out as prizes, sandwiches provided, do come along, it will be an excellent evening.

03/06/2008
PARK SURVEY RESULTS:
more than three quarters said they would be likely to use more or better paths and seating. About a third thought a specific teens area was a good idea. Less than a third liked the idea of a football practice area, but of course the main football pitch is definitely staying as is, so practising football there is already an option. Some replies did not give an opinion on the multi-use games area (MUGA) idea, perhaps because we failed to explain what it is; of the views expressed though, over half thought it was a good idea and would be likely to use it. There were many other suggestions for the Park, including more rubbish bins, better lighting to help people feel safer especially on winter evenings, tidying up the dead and fallen trees, dealing with dog fouling, adding to the children's playground area, and doing something with the pavilion. We have taken these opinions and started the process of designing Park improvements; once there is a proposed plan, we will discuss it with Renfrewshire Council to find the best way to make it happen, and the proposals will be available for the good people of Howwood to look at and comment on.

TRAFFIC DELAYS: it is Lilias Day in Kilbarchan this Saturday (7th June), and Lochwinnoch Gala Day the following Saturday (14th June), so traffic will be greatly delayed in these two places.

NEW ROAD MARKINGS:
the long awaited H bars across driveways in Main Street and Station Road have arrived, and new road marking at the Station Road/Main Street intersection, make it so much easier to see traffic. Please take care at the intersection, and remember there is no "middle" lane now, if you are turning right into Station Road coming from Johnstone.

Thank you to Midton Bowling Club, who took up my request to organise an event. There will be a QUIZ NIGHT on Tuesday 17th June, at the Bowling Club 7.30pm, any money taken in goes out as prizes, sandwiches provided, do come along, it will be an excellent evening.

ROAR: "Reaching Older Adults in Renfrewshire" is a campaign to help older people in the community, would you like to volunteer to help? No offer too small, please contact 0141 587 2487 or email: roar@rcvsweb.co.uk

COMMUNITY COUNCIL MEETING:
roads was the main item on the agenda. Complaints were passed on to that department about the state of Bowfield Road, particularly the huge pot holes near the junction with Midton Road, the damaged pavement on the inside of the bend by the crash barrier, and the many blocked drains. The Roads department intend to put a 40mph speed limit between Howwood and Johnstone, along both Midton Road and Beith Road, and to introduce a waiting restriction in the bay outside the new shop. The Community Council supports these measures; and we have been promised that the long awaited H bars across driveways in Main Street and Station Road, and new road marking at the Station Road/Main Street intersection, will go ahead soon! David Fulton gave a presentation of the Council's Community speedwatch initiative, which will require volunteers from the Community being trained to operate it. Speeding traffic is the issue most often raised by the people of Howwood, and this scheme offers an opportunity to combat it. Details of how it will work will be available at the Fete, but we will need help from outwith the CC, we now have only 10 members. The survey is now closed: a summary of results will be published.

HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH:
are needing helpers for Christian Aid week, which is May 11th-17th, if you can assist please contact Georgie Inglis, tel: 703809. Take a look at Tearfund's website www.tearfund .org to get a flavour of the work they do overseas, particularly with those suffering from HIV.

The Church's PLANT SALE will be on Friday 16th May, starting at 7pm. Be there pronto, if you want to get this years bedding plants, they tend to go fast!

GOOD CITIZEN: on a recent visit to Scotland's booktown: Wigtown in Dumfries & Galloway, as we walked up to the Martyrs monument above the town, there was a disabled guy in a battery powered wheelchair out for a stroll; he was using a litter picker and the basket at the front of his chair, to clear up bits of rubbish! We can all make excuses for not doing things, but where there is a will there is a way.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL MEETING: is Tuesday 13th May, at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. The new Community Council liaison Officer Anne McNaughton will be attending, as will Scott Allan from the Council's Roads Department. If there is a specific issue you wish to raise, please let me know, and I will pass it on to the chairman.

SURVEYS: keep them coming in. One issue that I have been asked to highlight is dog fouling. Most dog owners are responsible, but sadly some are not, and it makes no difference how often they are reminded to clear up after their dogs, how many dog pooh bins there are, some people just don't care where their dogs do it. When that is a children's play area, that hits an all time low. The only thing to do is report the owners to the dog warden: 0141 840 3164. She will contact the dog owner, and you do not have to leave your name if you that worries you.

ERSKINE BRIDGE CROSS:
members of the church are looking for sponsors to raise money for agricultural projects in the developing world. they will be walking across the Erskine bridge, this saturday (26th April). If you would like to sponsor them, contact Georgie Inglis on 01505 703809

WIND BAND CONCERT: the Glasgow Wind band are coming back again, and the date for the concert has been confirmed as Friday 13th June, 7.30pm in Howwood Parish (Church of Scotland) Church. So put it in your diaries, and evening not to be missed!

PARK MEETING: a senior member of the Environmental Services department of the Council was present at the last Community Council meeting, and as a result some matters have received rapid and welcome attention: namely better lighting in the "Triangle", the removal of the fallen trees in the park, and grass cuttings not being spread all over the paths in the "Triangle". The Council was supportive of our efforts in the Village Clean up, and plans to tackle some of the black spots themselves, they also are preparing to start enforcing the existing laws against littering and dog fouling. so if you are not in the habit of clearing up after your dog, or drop litter where ever you go, now would be a good time to stop.

FILL IN YOUR SURVEY: thanks to everyone who has sent a survey back completed, keep them coming: some useful ideas, some strange ones, but that is in the nature of any consultation. Again the importance of a safe link from the village to the Sustrans cycleway, has emerged. We will take up this project again with the Roads Department at the May meeting. The more support we get from the community, the easier it is to make a strong case.

TABLE TOP SALE: will be held in the Village Hall on Saturday 26th April from 1pm-4pm on behalf of Howwood Wildlife and Woodlands. You may have noticed, work has started to turn the area opposite the Howwood Inn into a woodland garden, with paths and seating areas. The proceeds from the Table Top sale, will go towards this project. If you would like a table to sell stuff at the sale, the cost is £10 and you can book it from myself, contact Andrew Wilson on 01505 702392; e-mail Andrew@Howwood.com

VILLAGE HALL:
has been repainted inside, and the floor re-done. The Community Council wrote to Renfrewshire Council, expressing the community's thanks for the upgrade, and the CC bought the new curtains, as our contribution. We are fortunate to have two excellent hall keepers in Margaret and Derek, we hope all users of the hall enjoy the splendid new decor!

SENIOR CITIZENS VOUCHER/OUTING SCHEME: is being run again. If you are 70 years old or over, or will be 70 this year: you qualify for either the annual bus trip and tea, a £22 voucher for shopping, or £22 off your Council tax......but you need to apply! I will leave the information and application forms with Linda at the Post Office, or you can phone the helpline on 0141 842 5850.

PARK MEETING: we have finally secured the next meeting with Council officials (Tuesday 22nd April), to discuss what could be done to improve the park. Our elected Councillors will be along to add support, which makes it even more important that you.....

FILL IN YOUR SURVEY: every household should have received one. If you have not, there are more at the Post Office, or shops, or you can fill it in on line at www.Howwood .com It will only take a few minutes, and will help us make a case for getting things done, which will benefit us all in the longrun. Thank you.

SPRING CLEAN: the annual litter picking/clean up of the village happened, and a big thank you to all who helped, including 2 of our Elected Councillors, which was much appreciated. The actual numbers who did help was incredibly low. It is very disappointing that nearly everyone in the village cannot spare time to help.

HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH WALKING GROUP:
will meet on Saturday 12th April @ 1pm at the church. The plan is to go to Rouken Glen, weather permitting. For full details phone Mairi Mitchell on 705129. All Welcome.

HOWWOOD W.R.I: the last meeting of the term is on Tuesday 15th April in the Village Hall at 7.30pm. It will be the AGM, and presentations; but Duncan McDoanld will speak about "Seasons for photography" as well.

BROWN BIN COLLECTION: you should have all received notification, that the brown bins will be collected on Fridays, starting with this Friday 11th April. I presume this applies to the whole village. So Brown bins go out the same week as blue boxes, and on the same day as the black bins. Everyone clear? If you need more information phone the Council's recycling helpline: 0141 842 4402.

ANYONE KNOW THE MCNABS OF MIDTON WORKS?:
our website received the following request. "My grandfather was Alexander MacNab, born April 4th, 1888—various spellings in documents of his were McNab-McNat, but we are not sure if this was due to spelling errors here in the USA. His birth certificate is deteriorated so badly we are unable to read it. Passport information and information passed to his daughters list his parents as James Miller MacNab and Elizabeth Clark MacNab. Their children were Alexander, Thomas, John, Agnes, Elizabeth and Mary. They came to the United States when my grandfather was in his 20’s—I believe sometime around 1911. His “naturalization” date to the USA was March 20, 1917. We are curious to see if any relatives still reside there or if anyone knows where the family homestead would have been. I would appreciate any help you could possibly provide." They are coming over in a fortnight so please let us know if you can help them.

BOOK SALE & COFFEE MORNING: will take place in Johnstone Town Hall on Saturday 5th April from 10.30pm until mid-day, on behalf of Christian Aid. Tickets for the even cost £1.50, and are available from Georgie Inglis, or at the door. If you can contribute books or home baking to Howwood Parish (Church of Scotland) stall please contact Georgie. via the church.

SPRING CLEAN
8 the annual litter picking/clean up of the village is coming. Meet at 1pm in front of the Village Hall on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th March: black bags, gloves, tabbards, and litter pickers will be provided. So come and lend a hand, even for half an hour. Children are welcome, preferably with a well behaved adult in tow, and will be kept clear of roads. The Primary School will be designing some posters on this subject, you can see them in both shops, the Post Office. If anyone wants to do their own thing and litter collect outwith the set times, please let me know. The Howwood Inn is kindly providing soup and sandwiches for all the helpers, both days. We will have a skip in the Village Hall car park on the weekend of 29th/30th March, bags can be picked up and taken back there, by those who have volunteered the use of their vans. We live in a pleasant village, in attractive countryside: have some pride and keep it that way.

TANZANIA HERE I COME!: One youngster is preparing to go to Africa to do voluntary work at the Aramani Centre for Disabled children in Morogoro in the Uluguru mountains (what a splendid name!) It is part of her “Citizen Programme” at Johnstone High School. However, in order to go along with 21 other pupils and 4 staff members, she needs sponsorship. Can you help? Do you know anyone or any group who could sponsor. If so please contact Rachael Mckenzie, either by phoning 703 295, or emailing smimi_1@hotmail.com, or leaving a note at Howwood Post Office.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG:
or so it seems. Sunday was a beautiful day after so much awful weather, it was a pleasure to be outside in the garden for a change, and the first Bumble Bees were out looking for pollen. However, do remember the old saying "ne'er cast a cloot till May is oot": the May being the May blossom (Hawthorn) of course, with its very distinctive smell, not the month of May. With that in mind......

SPRING CLEAN: the annual litter picking/clean up of the village is coming. As a recent survey carried out by Keep Scotland Beautiful revealed, 46% of those asked admitted to dropping litter: no wonder there is so much, in what is nothing short of a national sickness. If anyone wants to do their own thing and litter collect outwith the set times, please let me know.We will have a skip in the Village Hall car park on the weekend of 29th/30th March, bags can be picked up and taken back there, by those who have volunteered the use of their vans. SPRING CLEAN: the annual litter picking/clean up of the village is coming. We live in a pleasant village, in attractive countryside: have some pride and keep it that way.

GIVING UP SOMETHING FOR LENT:
whether you are a believing Christian or not, there is value of doing with out things for the 40 days and nights of Lent, in order to make the world a better place. For example the TV presenter Sally Magnusson is doing her bit to reduce her "carbon footprint": that is the amount to carbon being put into the atmosphere, that is contributing to climate change, which hits poor countries especially hard. One simple way: refuse all those plastic bags that you are offered in the shops, and use aown re-useable canvass bag. All those plastic bags have been made by using up the earth's scarce resources, and end up in land fill sites. So go green for lent, and stop using plastic bags all the time. Hopefully the habit will stick.

SIGNS OF SPRING?: a few dry, sunny days make all the difference. The crocuses and snowdrops come out, and we all feel better! Unfortunately Grey Squirrels are a wee bit partial to eating these bulbs, and the display in the park has been decimated by them. See the thanks you get for trying to brighten the place up!

SCOTTISH EVENING: went very well: around 62 senior citizens present, and 3 of our Councillors with their wife/husband (John Hood is recovering from a serious illness). Thanks to all who put in so much effort to make it such an enjoyable evening, and to our entertainers: namely the Clyde Coast Strathspey and Fiddle Society, and the Royal Scottish Country Dance Association (Ayr Branch).

HOWWOOD WRI: meets Tuesday 19th February at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, all welcome: when Mr & Mrs Fennel will be speaking about Alpacas in Scotland.

HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH GUILD: meets Monday 25th February at 7.45pm in the church hall when Juliet Robb with gifts from Palestine, will speak about "The Olive Tree"

RENEWABLE ENERGY:
is an "in" subject, but the interest is moving towards wave and tidal power and more hydro schemes and away from large intrusive windfarms, whether they be planned for Clyde Muirshiel Country Park or for Lewis. There is free advice out there on small scale community schemes, and ways you can reduce the energy you use in your home, and how you can access renewable sources of energy, such as solar panels, or photo voltaic tiles. The Community Council invited a speaker from Energy Wise Trust to give a talk at a special meeting on 15th January. Unfortunately it had to move location, and start earlier because of work being done on the Village Hall, so some of those attending missed the first part of the talk. If anyone needs more information: you can contact the Energy Efficiency Advice Centre on 0141 552 0799.

SCOTTISH EVENING: Saturday 9th February 2008 at 6.00pm in the Village Hall. As before, any Howwood resident 60 years of age or older can attend; there will be food, drink, and entertainment. This time from the Largs & District Fiddle Orchestra, and the Royal Scottish Country Dance Association (Ayr Branch), all for 75p. Last chance for tickets from Linda in the Post Office. Also if you need a lift to and from the evening, please let Linda know so we can arrange that for you.

HOWWOD PARISH CHURCH GUILD: meets Monday 11th February at 7.45pm in the church hall when John Stewart will talk about "CHICKS" (Country Holidays for Inner City Kids).

HOWWOOD COMMUNITY COUNCIL: meets Tuesday 12th February at 7.30pm in the Village Hall, all welcome; please let me know if you wish an item to appear on the agenda.

WATER REPAIRS:
the sewer is to be replaced in Station Avenue, work will take 4 weeks, but there should be no road closure, and no interruption of water supply. All householders should have received notification.

KEEP SCOTLAND BEAUTIFUL: sadly not something that nearly half the population are bothered about. They did a survey recently, and 46% of those asked admitted they dropped litter, in full knowledge that it was illegal. It carries a fine of £50, o that someone would enforce it, but it certainly helps to explain why there is so much of the stuff despoiling the countryside almost everywhere you go. It suggests we are not that proud to be Scottish, and not that concerned about the environment.

ROBERT BURNS BIRTHDAY: happened last week, despite the above revelation, I hope you toasted the bard in some way or another: his social commentary, and understanding of the human condition remain as relevant now as it was when he wrote, next year will be the 250th anniversary of his birth. Here is a quote: "The best laid schemes o' mice and men gang aft a-gley, An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain, for promis'd joy!" Look up a copy of his poems, and find our where this one comes from, if you don't know already.

HOWWOOD PLAYGROUP:
is looking for new kids to come along. So if you are a parent with a child who is aged between two and a half and five, why not go along to the Village Hall on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between 9.45 and 11.30 in the morning, and make yourself known to Kate or Fiona. Alternatively you can get more details from Karen on 01505 705643. The Village Hall is back in full use, after its floor refurbishment.

HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH GUILD: meets on Monday 28th January in the Church Hall at 7.45pm, when the Reverend David Stewart will be speaking about his visit to Malawi.

SCOTTISH EVENING: Saturday 9th February 2008 at 6.00pm in the Village Hall. As before, any Howwood resident 60 years of age or older can attend; there will be food, drink, and entertainment. WILDLIFE by the BLACK CART: with all the rain, and the work on the new path from St Bryde's Bridge to the Fancy Bridge, there was no-one walking along the river last week, when I was there with our dogs. As a result there was a large flock of Canada Geese, a small flock of Whooper Swans, some Mute Swans, lots of duck, waders, and even four roe deer bounding across the fields. If you can, get out and see some wildlife, it will lift your spirits at this gloomy time of year; and as I discovered we have an abundance on our doorstep.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL MEETING:
we had a representative from the Environmental Services Department of Renfrewshire Council present (Andy Summers). The intention is that he or a colleague, will attend every 3 months, so we can address any relevant matters to them directly. There was agreement in principle from them, that the Council would support any improvements to the Park, that we can raise funds for. So the next step will be to survey public opinion in the village, and a survey will go out with the next newsletter, asking people what facilities they would use; although we are limited by what can fit into the existing area, without encroaching on the football field. The survey will put suggestions before you, and we are looking to hear which ones you would use. Sadly the playground is being vandalised again, I am loath to give the culprits the oxygen of publicity, but ask that if you see anyone damaging it, phone the Police immediately. There is no point seeking any reason behind their actions, just do your bit to put a stop to it, so kids can enjoy what has been built for them.

SCOTTISH EVENING: Saturday 9th February 2008 at 6.00pm in the Village Hall. As before, any Howwood resident 60 years of age or older can attend; there will be food, drink, and entertainment. FETE: further into the year, we have set Saturday 21st June, as the day for the Village Fete. We are looking into potential attractions, including getting the show people who provide the rides at the Johnstone Festival to come along. Clearly ours is a much smaller event, so there is much negotiating to be done before that is definite; but we want to make it a fun day for everyone, without knackering ourselves!

A GUID NE'ER TAE A'BODY, AND MONY MAY YE SEE:
NEW YEAR WALK: took place last Saturday, and a few hardy souls braved the elements to walk to the "Temple" and back. I was not one of them, too wet and wild for me, or the dogs. The new path being built from St Bride's bridge to the Fancy bridge is well under way, and Saturday's walkers, would have had a good view of it. It will mean people can walk from the Cycleway down to the Black Cart, and on to the Scottish Water access road that goes past Elliston Weir, as far as the lay-by at Garthland Bridge. The Community Council will be putting pressure on to get a pavement the short distance from the village to Garthland bridge, with safe pedestrian and cycle access over the bridge, to link the village to this new path. hopefully we will succeed.

HOWWOOD PARISH CHURCH: has had its bell refurbished and restored to working order. It was previously worked by pulling a rope but that system was not reliable. The bell has been fitted with an electric bell clapper after donations were received. It will once again be possible to hear the bell tolling not only for special occasions but also prior to Sunday worship at 11am. I heard it two Sundays ago, and what a pleasant peaceful sound it was; I guess more will become aware of it, as the days lengthen and people are out in their gardens. I think it adds to the country village feel that Howwood has, nearly as good as hearing the first Willow Warbler!

HOWWOOD PARISH GUILD: meets on Monday 14th January in the Church Hall at 7.45pm, the evening is entitled "On our own".

HOWWOOD WRI: meets the following evening, Tuesday 15th January at 7.30pm, for a cookery demonstration from Mrs Rae Hutchison. I would guess they are meeting in the Church Hall, because the Village Hall is getting its floor repaired. Check with a committee member to confirm the venue, if you are planning to attend.

ENERGY SAVING: climate change and energy awareness are highly relevant topics. A speaker from the energy efficiency advice centre is coming to Howwood on Tuesday 15th January. This meeting has had to be re-arranged, so will now be in the Primary School, Semple View at 7.30pm. The speaker will be Neil Philips, who will explain about renewable technologies, that s and individuals or community group can install.
